I have not seen much in the way of detailed comparison.

Mmmm, I don't think I would count on that. We would be lucky if the 5D MKII was on par with the high ISO capabilities of the D3, let alone exceed it.

And FWIW, the D3 & D700 are the same in regards to sensor & processing, and there have been a few comparisons between the 5D MKII & D700.

The production camera is still to new to see quality photos from yet. Give it a month or so!

Um, the 5DmkII just started shipping, like this week--It'll be a little while before there are ANY comparisons. You can compare some early photos, but until real photographers get the camera in their hands, have a chance to use it in the real world, have a chance to use it against other cameras in the real world, it's mostly just baseless or speculation based on a few images.

Edit: too slow--DigitalSpecialist beat me too it succinctly!

LOL, this is good. I'm not sure if you understand the meaning of "a stop better".

Anyway, not a stop, not half of a stop, not even a quarter. They are very close @ ISO 100 (in fact the D3 appears to be a *tiny bit* better than the 5D2), and I don't see any difference in noise @ ISO 1600.

Unfortunately, I don't have images from the 5D2 @ ISO 1600 really suitable for measuring the noise, so that result is not very reliable. I would not be surprized with the 5D2 turning out 1/4 EV better @ ISO 1600.

This noise characteristics at that pixel count? This is great! What on earth were you thinking?

Just too early to tell. We need to give people time to sit down and do proper comparisons.

There would be no point in comparing the D3 to the 5D II because the D700 is much closer to the 5D II in overall numbers (burst mode, etc.) than the D3 is, and is priced similarly.

Yeah, but Canon and Nikon are more divergent at this point than usual--the D700 and 5DmkII are aimed at different types of shooters, IMO. The D700 is much more the low light, tough, do everything camera where the 5D is more the studio/landscape/portrait/wedding camera. Nikon and Canon almost never compete directly, but these two seem more different than past offerings.

Um...the D3 and D700 use the same sensor.

HAHA this made me laugh:

"The sound is a litte nicer than the one of the 5D- It's more a "zacka" than the 5D "bommba". But it is not louder than 5D and still lower the "zideng" of 1DsM3 (which I love). I think I feel a tensed spring in the camera body when pressing the button."

Omg, best review ever

"I recently climbed a building crane (64m) with the 1dsm3 around my neck. It made bang some times. But baby still works. I am sure the 5Dm2 would do this as well."

"Oh yes, I tried to make some Movies. A kind of Reverie in 10 minutes. Hm... I didn't make it, the outcome was a sequence of senseless multi MB movie snippets with noise of IS, wind, my unconscious commentation and expletives."
