gj, what problems did you have with the lens to have to send it in 2 times? I've been having some, what I think is out of focus issues too, so I plan to send it in to Canon. The problem I have is when shooting close it is pretty focused or sharp but when shooting at distances they are not that sharp. What is the procedure to send the lens in to Canon?

Thanks

I had a focus issue with my 40D. I first noticed taking a picture of a wild swan. When I got home all pics just weren’t crisp. Looking at them closely I noticed that the water in fron of the swan was sharp but the bird was not. Here is a post showing the issue.

Talking to Canon they had me send in the lens. It was returned in about two weeks and had essentially the same problem. Not quite as bad as before, but still there. Calling Canon again I they requested I send in both the body and the lens. When it came back it was a bit better but still not spot on. That prompted the upgrade to the 50D.

With the 50D using the micro focus adjustment feature I was able to get the lens focus spot on but still at times it delivered soft pics, hence this thread.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I noticed you micro focus adjustment was 1. Is that significant enough to make a noticeable difference. Also, how did you go about testing your lens to make the adjustment?

Thanks for the info.

I don't know why it is 1 in the EXIF data. It is 4 in the camera. Maybe 1 just indicates that MF was engaged and a 0 indicates it was not.
