I'm thinking of getting the Canon SX10. I have always enjoyed photography, and believe I have an "eye" for good pictures. My experience up to this point has been using compact point and shoots on a casual basis. I now want to move forward into photography as a hobby but at this point I don't want to lug around a heavy bag of lenses, other equipment, and a camera. Maybe I'll graduate to that level later on. So, I've been doing a bit of research and found that an advanced point and shoot is all I want/need. I am thinking of the Canon SX10 PowerShot. I like the flexibility of its lens (wide angle vs. long zoom), IS, and the Canon reputation for quality cameras and nice looking pictures.

Is the SX10 a good camera and why?

Thank you.

yes, because it has the best "image quality" of the superzoom type cameras

Get a real camera. You don't need a ton of lenses either, just two or three good ones. For ex, rebel or 40/50D with a 17-40 f/L, 50 1.4 and a 70-200 f/4L or 2.8L. It may cost you a penny or two, but you'd be set with that kind of package for years and years, maybe upgrading bodies here and there but lenses are forever. Take that, de beers.

actually most people eventually discard or try to sell their Rebel and buy a superzoom camera like the SX10 because they want telephoto, macro, video and great pics in one camera.

I will never regret buying my SX10. I do plan on moving to a DSLR before too long but for the price there is a lot of different things you can do with the SX10. It is a good learning tool for digital photography. If you do decide to buy it, check with Adorama or B&H, they have good prices and free shipping!

I have to admit, I may end up joining that statistic. A st-e2 and a speedlite, I should be golden!

I may not be typical, but here goes. A year and a half ago I bought a Canon XTi and several lenses. I started with a Sigma 17-70mm and a Sigma 70-300 APO. The 70-300 APO was a disappointment from the start, if it was not on a tripod, the shot was blurred. I got tired of carrying the big camera and lenses around, making tons of adjustments and changing lenses. I did sell the 70-300 and bought a Tamron 28-300 VC which gave me MUCH better shots. I stll got tired of all the fooling around.

I sold the whole works and bought the Canon SX10 IS!

Wow, am I ever happy. Now I pretty much point and shoot and get shots I generally like better. I never did want to be Ansel Adams anyway and now, life is easier. I always did just want nice photos, not to be a photographer. Most people on here never print bigger than 5 x 7 anyway. If you are a "family" photographer, like me, save your money.

Look at my profile and follow the link to all of my posts. The last 3 weeks or so have all be with the SX10. Or hit the link to my Flickr page below and I have all shots taken with the new camera tagged "SX10". If you need all gallery quality shots, spend the money. If you just want to be close to that, get the SX10. I am sure happy I did.

I bought mine at BuyDig.com for $349, no tax - no shipping.

I just looked those three lenses up on Amazon. They are currently going for $638, $319.95 & $1533.79 respectively. That is a total of $2491.74 (yikes) add the camera body and a few goodies that you NEED and you are soon talking more than a "a penny or two"!

Zell, if you have THAT kind of money, Buy the XTi and all the stuff you need - AND buy an SX10 for when you just feel like taking a few easy pictures.

I believe the SX10 is a "real" camera. The reason I like it is because I don't want to carry around a heavy bag of two or three lenses. I'm not interested in that now -- and may not ever be. Thanks.

Yikes! That is way too much money to spend since I have a family to support. My wife would kill me if I spent that kind of money right now.

Thanks for the great info. I did buy the camera from Amazon. I'll get it tomorrow but I'll Christmas-wrap the box and give it to myself and my wife on Christmas -- she doesn't know we're getting it but I've told her about it and she likes the camera.

By the way, a few weeks ago I also bought (before I knew about the SX10) a Canon Powershot A590 IS. Also got it from Amazon for $113. It's a great camera for taking family photos such as birthdays, holidays, etc. It will also be our vacation camera when we got to Disneyland or some other destination like that. It's a fair-to-good camera that suits that purpose just fine. It replaces an old Nikon Coolpix point and shoot that is dieing on us. So we'll have both cameras. The SX10 will be for when we go hiking in the mountains in UT or visit national parks like Yellow Stone and the Grand Canyon. It's the camera we'll use to try and take some good and somewhat creative photos.

Zell, you will love the SX10 IS. It is the only camera I use right now, so I use it for everything. With the camera off and the lens retracted, it fits in my coat pocket. My wife and I are going downtown Chicago this evening to try and get a nice shot for our Christmas card. I will post some shots tomorrow so you can see what I got.

Thank you. I'm pretty excited about it and I'm certain my wife will be as well.

Yes, I'd like to see your shots. I'll check your photos on Flickr as well. Take care.
