Now we read/see that a few lucky ones have received their new 'friend' the 5D MKII.
I've looked through a number of threads but haven't seen so much about the AF issue that so many people were worried about...?

Can anyone of new owners please comment on this (you lucky bastards ;))
How is it compared to the old 5D?
How is it doing compared to, let's say the 40D or the 1D MKIII?
What about the outer focus points?
ete. etc.

I think there aren't many comments because it is just as expected -- a known, reliable system (if you stick to the center point).

Subscribing to hear owner reactions...

No doubt! I'm considering purchasing one as well, and that (in addition to image quality concerns) is one of my main hold backs from committing to buy one.

You can buy a 16.7 mp 1DS2 for the same price... things that make you go 'hmmmmm'...

Heh! That can be a real problem with ducklings..."Hey! My picture's all fuzzy!"

As people mentioned, this irrational thinking is, well, irrational. 5dmkII has the same AF as the 5d, and people were pissed off about it because it wasn't a new system. Now people don't trust the AF? Stop reading random forum reviews and just try one out for yourself. Go to a store and ask the guy to let you see one, they almost always have a display one.

My question is: how well does the center point on the 5D2 work in light that's so low that you have to use ISO 25,600 to get the shot?

In other words, is the focus system up to the level that the rest of the camera is for low light work?

From what I have seen around POTN the AF seems to be faster than the 5D but as expected is not as good on the outer points as it is on the center point.

NOTHING compares to a 1 series except a 1series ........ apples and oranges otherwise.

ete. etc.

First -- I should tell you that the last SLR I used (and still own) is a Nikon F5. For the past five years + I've used a Powershot G5 and G10.

With that in mind: I find the focus speed on the 5D II mighty fast! In candor, I can't see how much faster it could get. Outer focus points seem to lock just as quickly.

Re. focus "accuracy": over the weekend I THOUGHT I wasn't getting proper focus; I did play with the AF microadjustment feature of the 5D II. Also posted a thread here as well.

As it turned out, the focus is fine: the problem (and not really a "problem") is that the default sharpness setting on the camera is low. When upped just a bit, focus looks crisp.

Here's the strange part: Live View focus seems SUBSTANTIALLY slower than on the G10. However, Live View Face Detect is just a tad slower on the 5D II than on the G10.

Hope this helps; let me know if there's something else more specific.
