he probably still could have taken this w/o the candle light due to the ambient reddish purple light but he would have had to use a very slow shutter speed (in the seconds range) to pull enough light in to light the picture to make everything visible.

but again you can do this with any camera as long as you have some sort of ambient light and long shutter speeds.

i saw a pic before that a guy took a scenic beach with mountains at the backgrd at 2 am in the night and the pic came out like bright day light and the best part is u can also see the stars shinning in dots ... how did he manage to focus at the first place... the camera aren't going to allow the lens to focus lock in pitch dark right...that's what triggered my curosity...

Either use a Flashlight, obtain focus on something far away, turn off AF and then shoot away... or set the lens to infinity and shoot away.

I used a 580 EX II flash (with the flash turned off) to focus assist. Without the flash focus was very slow and difficult with lots of hunting, but with the focus assist it was easy. You just have to put up with people telling you that your flash did not fire :)

do u need to off the AF? like what Todd mentioned above. So just put in the external flash and off it to 'fool' the 5DMKII, right?. then just shoot as settings? cheers!

I have a brand new 5D Mkii. I am seriously flabbergasted by the image quality. Many have spoken of its seemingly "3D" effect in certain situations. Now I believe it:

Taken in Hamilton, New Zealand, last night. Image unprocessed jpeg except for re-sizing.

Instead of loving things and using people, why not use things and love people? :-)
