Yup - I need to look into getting an IR filter for the built in flash so that it doesn't cast a shadow any more - shame it can't be disabled - I thought it could, but now I don't think so.

An IR filter will prevent the flash from casting shadows? I would be interested in where you read that. The shadows are caused by the hard small light source. Had you fired these units into an umbrella it would have made the light source larger and softer. Also the main light was too high. The main light should leave a catchlight in the eyes of the subject.

The IR filter will only let through IR, which isn't visible, so it won't cast a shadow, but the IR is all that's needed to trigger the flash.

Using a softer light source would have defeated the aim of the shoot for hard moody lighting - for the same reason that the main light was high - that was the look I was aiming for :D.
