On the serious side - Twice.
First I was 18 and taught myself B/W processing, use a bathroom as a darkroom. The supported me in college. Few years after college I lost interest.

Second - 3 years ago - I retired at age 53 and needed a hobby and joined the digital age. Still only a serious hobby, but I'm also back at my old college.

A minor in college with my own darkroom---both color and black and white (dad was rich). First camera--a Canon EF. Got out of it when I started a career and had kids. Got back into it a couple of years ago and enjoy it now more than ever.

I bought my first dSLR last year when I was 25. I used it constantly for a little while, but it fell by the wayside once I bought a Vespa. I found the two hobbies competed too much... nice days went to riding.

Now I've sold my Vespa (I'm done with two-wheeled motorized vehicles forever) so my attention's back on photography in full force.

Why'd you sell the Vespa?

I started in photography back when I first went on active duty in the Navy in 1966. I was 20 at the time and I've been at it ever since...

Really neat looking at your old cameras. Much different than what we have now.

A friend was in a very serious motorcycle accident in July (cut off by a drunk driver at 5:30 in the afternoon one Saturday) which made me rethink the risk. Figured a nice, safe hobby would be better for me.

I am 31 and have been interested in photography for the past year and bought an XTi back in May. I am still learning and taking many pics; especially of my 2 month old son:D

20 when I bought my first camera in Okinawa. Went to college and studied photography at 27. I was already shooting weddings for a large studio part time. Got a BA and worked as a full time pro since the day I finished in 1986.

So I've been a photographer (serious) for 33 years. Pro 30 years, full time pro for 22 years and have had my own full time professional business ( all corporate) for 8 years.

First was 15, when I joined the yearbook staff and took photography as an elective in high school. Then I kind of dropped out for (cough, cough) 25 or so years. The second time was just a couple years ago.

Although I'm somewhat reluctant to call myself a photographer. I need to learn and practice more before I'd say that.

I dabbled in it, off and on... but it was 2001 when I started really putting more than one toe in the water.

I started with film when I was in my early 20's. I was quite serious for 5-6 years but gave up when my gear was stolen.

I kept at it with film to a lesser degree for the next 25 years, and then have got into it seriously again in the last 2+ years. It's amazing how a DSLR rekindled my interest.

My first SLR.
