I'd like to get a hood for my 50mm for stray light, but will I be able to mount it with a Canon 58m UV Haze filter also on the lens?

Looks like I can get a knock-off for <$10 on Ebay.

Yes, you should be able to mount a filter and a hood on the same time.

the hood on any canon lens attaches to the outer rim of the lens. Filters are not affected - they attached to the inside rim of the outermost element - where the lens cap goes

Not always, the knock off hood I have for my 50 1.8 screws into the filter thread and the cap goes into the hood after that, but its impossible to use a filter and a hood at the same time. Depends on the hood you get.

Only the 50mm 1.8 Mk II works that way.

Most "Knock off hoods" don't thread into the the filter threads.

"knock offs" are a copy of the original and mount to the lens body just like a Canon hood. (unless you have a 50mm Mk II)

Huh? You can't just screw the hood into the front threads of the filter?

In fact, it's easier to use a screw-in generic hood with a polarizer, because it allows you to easily rotate the filter. (This assumes a round hood, not a petal type... most screw-in are not petal type anyway.)

OP, definitely get a lens hood for your 50mm. So long as the hood mounts via the bayonet, you should be able to reverse it for storage, which helps protect this particular lens' AF mechanism from bumps.

And, before coming back here and posting "my lens is soft", lose the Canon UV filter. For one thing, Canon's filters aren't all that great. I'm not even sure they are multi-coated, and if that' the case they are very overpriced. For another thing, it's an unnecessary extra layer of glass that is more likely to mess with your images than to improve them. The hood provides much better "protection" for the lens, anyway.

Amfoto1 - agreed on losing the filter. I do notice a little softness when using that filter, but I shoot outside so much I'm paranoid about dust and bumps. I think once I have a hood, I'll lose the filter.

That one attaches to the bayonet mount like the OEM lens, which is good. one thing to be aware of is that the OEM hood has a felt-ish coating on the inside of it to make sure that it doesn't reflect light. I can't tell from teh pics on the ebay hood, but if the inside of it is just the hard plastic then bright light hitting the inner surface could be reflected into the lens.

krb - of course, I could get some felt for pennies at a craft store and glue is basically free. :)

Canon hoods do NOT have felt inside them. It's more like a flocking. One end of the short fibers is fastened to the inner surface of the hood and the other end is loose - sort of like a very short haircut.

yeah, that's why I called it felt-ish. mrludecrs, view the enlarged product image at http://www.bhphotovideo.com …2_ES_71_II_Lens_Hood.html (external link) and you can kinda see what it looks like. Even without the lining, the ebay hood is better than nothing for both lens flare and physical protection, it's just not quite as good as the OEM part that costs 3 times as much.

If anyone else is wondering, I bought this hood from the seller below and it works well. $7.39 shipped from China, took about 10 days to get but beats $30 for OEM.

I just got the hood I ordered from Ebay (see link above). The fit is just fine as far as I'm concerned. The interior isn't felt, but it's very flat black plastic. I'm going to see about a DIY black felt liner, but I'm not sure if it'll be necessary. I'll have to find a authentic Canon for comparison, first. Anyone with a Canon ES-71 want to take nice detailed picture?

great deal, thanks for the link, heritage.

I have the Canon lens hood for the 1.8 and it does not have any material on the inside of the hood so I'm not worried.
