Canon 30D + 580EX / 430EX AF Beam does not fire

Hi,

I'm wondering if you guys can help me.

I've got a canon 30D and have recently got a 580EX flash. I had a 430EX flash before and I'm having a problem.

In any of the automatic modes the AF assist beam (the red focusing lights) fires and works brilliantly. In any of the manual modes (P-->A-DEP) the AF assist beam does not fire.

I've looked in the manual, I've looked at the flash and I've looked on the camera. I can't see where I'm going wrong.

I've changed the custom functions that says
"AF-assist beam"
0 - Emits
1 - Does not emit
2 - Only external flash emits

I've tried all three, obviously 1 shouldnt work but neither 0 or 2 work.

I might be being an idiot and the AF-Beam doesnt work in any of the manual modes. I'm sure i've seen it work though.

any ideas?

Had to change the camera to ONE SHOT and Single fire.
