Just wanted to ask the 17-55 owners what if they use a UV filter and lens hood with their 17-55 IS? Do you use just a UV filter, just a lens hood, both or neither?

FIlters (even expensive ones) have always IMO reduced IQ.

My 17-55 is tack sharp and the lens hood is big enough to protect it so thats how it stays!!

I've had a hoya uv filter on my 17-55 since it came out of the box.

I keep UV filters on everything though.

I've had a Pro1 Hoya on there since day 1 also. I just ordered a EW83J from Amazon so hopefully that comes soon :)

True, but ocean air or the shenanigans in front of a live band in a club can reduce IQ a lot more - my filters (and hoods) stay on ;)

i try to keep the filter on as much as possible. im anal about the dust issues with the lens. anytime there is a lot of light out doors i throw on the hood as well.

I have both on all my lenses. I'm a bit old school with filters though.

Filter on the lens helps prevent the dust getting under the front element

Just a hood for me. I Only use a UV filter if near the water to keep spray off the front element. I think a filter can cause more harm (e.g. flare) than a little dust will imo.

I use to worry about dust on the front element of the 17-55 until I found out that the front element is removable and cleanable and the only skill needed is the ability to use a screwdriver.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

yep pro1 here also and a hood.. without the filter this lens will eventually gather dust... but OTOH, it's not that difficult to take it apart and clean the front element
