Just wanted to ask the 17-55 owners what if they use a UV filter and lens hood with their 17-55 IS? Do you use just a UV filter, just a lens hood, both or neither?

True, but ocean air or the shenanigans in front of a live band in a club can reduce IQ a lot more - my filters (and hoods) stay on
