I know this question has been asked before but image wise how does the 1ds II compare to a 5d Classic or 5D Mark II. So far from my observation all the 5d image characteristics are it has a natural dark shadows, vibrant color depth which brings in a lot of Punch 3d characteristics with the 5d Mark II being similar only a little brighter more smoother refined polished look . I think the 1ds II fits somewhere in the middle... same or a little more detail as the 5d's maybe with a little less punch? Also with the upcoming 1ds IV to be released will this mean a automatic price drop in 1ds Mark II? If so by how much?

Dynamic range wise, I'm completely happy with my 1DsMkII and I was a former 5D Classic user. I am finding many shots I take can easily be turned into 1 shot HDR's and many more, with careful PS manipulation, can give HDR like results without the HDR processing steps. The picture I just posted is a good example of that.

As for price drops in the future, that's sort of a crystal ball type of question...sort of like asking for the winning lotto numbers to next week's draw! Wish I knew!

What I can tell you is that the focus system, build quality and weather sealing are in a class all by them self that neither of the 5D cameras can even dream of touching. Once you use one, you'll never go back.

Cheers!

The lens for that shot was the EF14 f/2.8 L USM mk II.

I don't have an unprocessed version handy at this moment but can post one in a bit. In advance though, having good PS chops is all part of the craft.

Cheers!

Here's the before and after...

Shooting in raw is an absolute must as being able to play with the exposure levels in post is where you're able to extract a lot of hidden data. Cloud detail especially.

Cheers!

Thanks mate, are you able to fit any filters on a 14L. Right now I have a 17-40 L with no body coming from a Nikon d40.

I've seen some pretty outlandish filter mounts for this lens but I don't bother with any of them.

I just shoot full manual, spot meter for the highs and lows and work the rest of it in post.

In short, there are no magic cameras out there. There is much more in the realm of shooting and processing creatively and making the most of that.

The 1DsMkII is a viable tool in that process. What you do with it is up to you.

Cheers!

Absolutley true - I bought mine new in 2006 and would never part with it. Crop cameras come and go (40D, 50D & now 7D), but the 1Ds II stays. Love using it - it is an extraordinarly good camera.

So i finally found this thread...

And i just traded my 5d mk1, for the 1ds mk2.

I'm loving it. Short of being able to connect to about any pc i have.

Whats the deal ? i did a search on the forums and came up with a ton of unrelated threads :(

I got XP on my laptop/Desktop, and nothing.

Should work fine with XP, but, you need firewire to connect. Not USB. ;)

Oh, and congrats.

Thanks, i'll try picking up a Firewire adaptor for the laptop for now i guess, since i usually shoot tethered or can at least download that way and ship to my desktop later.

It was really a hard toss between a 5dmk2 and 1dsmk2, but i figure if i really dislike it, i can switch it with someone. I'm a bit envious of the 5dmk2's LCD, but i figure i can keep this camera for Years longer then the shiny 5dmk2 :D

Edit: So wait, whats the usb thingy supposed to do ? Anything at all ?

It var the printer market department who wanted that as they hoped to sell more ink to their Shelpy printers....

What the photographers is missing, is the robust firewire connector from the mk1...

Be careful when tethering as some has reported the small firewire connector loose contact after some use. Mine is till good though, but I tether only now and then. I have seen a picture for a Canon-rubber-gadget (probably somewhere in this thread :) ) you can put on your firewire cable to support more rugged use. Never seen it in real-life though :(

Best Regards,
Arild

Thought you guys would be the best to ask. I'm very tempted by a 1DsMk2 and was after a little info.

Have been told high iso isn't great. Currently have a 50D which is tarred with the same brush although I haven't been overly concerned. What is the highest clean iso usability on the camera?

Of course I'll be buying 2nd hand, apart from high shutter actuations and an obviously knocked about body, what else should I look out for to find a goodun and avoid an old dog that will cost to repair?

Cheers - I'm hoping I can post soon to say "I'm in the club":)

I hope someone here can help. When I bought my 1Ds MkII, no software came with it. It looks like I need EOS Utility 2.4 in order for it to be compatable with the camera. I've searched online and haven't been able to find it to download.

Does anyone here know where I can download this version or would be willing to make a copy of the CD that came with your 1Ds MkII and mail to me? I would be happy to pay for any postage of course.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Doc
