You can do something like this in the registry you have to make it in notepad and import it to registry then the soft will install.

But check it out online first.!!!!! some might have to have install added now and 64bit OS is different

Thanks but I'd rather not mess with the registry.

I did find a 2.4.1 updater (Canada) and by installing all the canon software but the EOS Utility for the 7D then running the updater, it installed version 2.4.1. The camera still isn't recognized through my firewire connection even though I get the confirmation beep when I turn the camera on after plugging into the firewire cable. I'll have to verify the connection will work with my 7D now. I may need to use a different port on the computer.

The reason I wanted the utility is so I can install Personal Function 8. This will then let me set up the camera to do AEB beyond the default 3 exposures. Here's a quote from the Canon Digital Learning Center:

Original EOS-1D, EOS-1Ds, and all Mark II series:
Install Personal Function 8 into camera (connect FireWire cable from camera to computer, activate EOS Utility or EOS Viewer Utility software, go to Camera Settings > Personal Functions, and upload P.Fn 8 into camera after selecting 2, 5, or 7 bracketed shots as an option). Then, once installed, P.Fn 08 can be turned on or off in camera's menu. If user selects 2-shot bracket using P.Fn 08, Custom Function 09-0 or 09-1 provides a normal and under-exposed frame; C.Fn 09-2 or 09-3 generates a normal and over-exposed bracketed 2-frame sequence.

If your camera 1Ds markII isn't recognized by the firewire and you are on a 64 bit os thats why

And if that isn't the case and you are on a 32 bit os the software utility has a box to tick and apply in its settings to have the camera activate the software when plugged in.

That utility version 2.4.0.1 is old now

2.8.1.0 now thats what i have on

OK. Yes, I do have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS. I'll install everything on one of my laptops that's still using XP Pro 32bit. Think that will solve my problem?

Thanks.

From what I can tell, the newer versions of the Utility don't support the Mk II. Could you verify that?

Here's a screenshot from the 2.4 Utility manual.

when I used the 1Ds markII it had no way to work with a 64 bit OS on a firewire.
There is no drivers for it period.

Yes if you have 32 bit OS XP or Vista, I know they work for sure
If on on a laptop and a firewire connection plus its enabled in the cmos/bios it should work
when you plug in and its detected you may want to go into the software and tick the box like i posted above.

I am pretty sure on a 32 bit os I had the 2.6.0.1 or 2.7.0.1 utility working with it but that was awhile ago.

I believe an XP machine (32bit) will solve your issues....regardless of utility version. Firewire will pick the cam. up, with no issues.

It was really a hard toss between a 5dmk2 and 1dsmk2, but i figure if i really dislike it, i can switch it with someone. I'm a bit envious of the 5dmk2's LCD, but i figure i can keep this camera for Years longer then the shiny 5dmk2 :D

My exact thinking. 1dsII has been a great step after familiarizing myself with the 1dII.

I noticed ISO 50 is noisier than 100-640. yeah?

Well, I decided to pick up a new lens and got the ts-e17mm L! :D

Gave it a bit of a try-out this morning...

^^Cool, congrats. Must be an interesting lens, that's for sure. Nice straight lines, in the shot, too. :)

Thought you guys would be the best to ask. I'm very tempted by a 1DsMk2 and was after a little info.

Have been told high iso isn't great. Currently have a 50D which is tarred with the same brush although I haven't been overly concerned. What is the highest clean iso usability on the camera?

Of course I'll be buying 2nd hand, apart from high shutter actuations and an obviously knocked about body, what else should I look out for to find a goodun and avoid an old dog that will cost to repair?

Cheers - I'm hoping I can post soon to say "I'm in the club":)

People knock the high ISO performance of this camera without ever having any practical experience. Nor any context--are you blowing up the photo to billboard size?

Not only does the high ISO clean up really well, it retains more color and detail than any camera released at the time. The xxD series is NOT comparable in terms of noise performance. The big caveat is that applies to shooting in RAW. All the newer cameras have better high ISO noise reduction when shooting in JPEG mode. The xxD series high ISO turns to "mush" (save perhaps the 7D) compared to even the 1D2 (let alone the 1Ds2) where the noise is more film-like.

If you're not concerned with the high ISO performance of the 50D, I doubt you'll be concerned about the high ISO performance of the 1Ds2.

Here's a previous example I posted of ISO 3200:
https://photography-on-the.net …ight=iso+3200#post7968064

If you do a thread search for "ISO 3200" or "ISO 1600" in this thread, there are plenty of other examples.

As for things to check on the used 1Ds2, shoot the sky at 1/8000th of a second to see whether there's the dreaded "shutter bounce." This is an indicator of impending shutter failure. The 1D/Ds II series have been known to be susceptible to early shutter failure.

Thanks Manish! ;)

It's a very interesting lens with an alleged huge learning curve because of all the controls for tilting, shifting and rotating coupled with manual focus only and trickier procedures to meter the shots and the tilting and shifting messes with the camera's ability to meter properly...but, I seem to have a handle on how to work with all that and am enjoying not having to do all those perspective corrections in post that I used to do on many of my shots so it's good to spend a minute or two setting up the shot, rather then an hour or two in post, trying to fix it! ;)

Cheers!

I hear that, Jeff. I'm sure it'll be a fun lens, once you get some cool perspectives of buildings, and straight lines incorporated into your shots. And TS beats having to deal with post, I agree...such the tedious process.

Lookin' forward to a more thorough review, once you get the hang of it. :)

Here's one more, with a downward shift...which was a bit tricky to do as I didn't bring my tripod along to ensure everything was level so just did it by eye.

Wait...

What ?

Also, i have discovered two new things, that i love about the 1dsmk2, i do not know if 7d/5dmk2 have them but they are awesome.

1) is multiple spot measure readings, up to like 8 ? i only need 3 so i'm way good.

2) AF point memorization, with the option to hold down a button. So now, if i just AF normally, its center point only, if i hold down a button, i get the most right af point instantly for that shot t'ill i let go of said button. Super super useful for portraits!

I got my laptop to recognize it, then the laptop died. Uh yeah. (I think thats more my laptop though.)

I've managed to get 1/250th with ebay triggers as well btw :) 100% no line, but only about 75% of the time. so i'll stick to 1/200th.

I did manage a 1/320th without lines from the triggers, but only once out of maybe 4 shots.

As to why the camera wasn't being loaded in correctly, it mostly has to do with the drivers/eos not being installed/removed/updated properly for some reason. So i went and cleaned up all of the leftovers from them, even in the registry files. Did a fresh fresh install, and it worked.

So whats this about a shutter bounce ? Mine has about 60k on it... I don't think i should worry just yet though.

Well, an update. When I pulled out my laptop, it had no firewire port. I have a usb to firewire connnector but am under the impression that won't work.

So, I installed the software on my other desktop with Vista 32 bit, plugged the camera into the firewire cable and got a message that the device driver couldin't be found. I had it search the CD and the Canon folder on the hard drive and still no go.

I'm kinda stumped at this point...one of the reasons for my buying the camera was to have more than 3 bracketed AEB. Another was for AF using my 100-400 with the 1.4x extender. The third reason was for FF.

I don't have an extender yet but hopefully, I'll have two of the three reasons why I bought the camera sometime soon.
