If you're looking for a brighter screen to help with MF on the 1Ds II, try the EC-C IV: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Focusing_Screen_for.html (external link)

You would suggest the EC-CIV over the EC-S for precision MF? Can you give me any reasons why and does the EC-S screen have the built-in cF to compensate for whatever effect it may have on metering as opposed to the EC-CIV?

Keep in mind all of my glass is 2.8 or faster. Thanks.

Can't tell you much about the Ec-S since I haven't tried it myself. I can tell you that the C IV is brighter than the C III (which is the standard), and it is better at "focus snap." I shoot mainly in RAW, so the negligible exposure difference is inconsequential. But as I said, if you're shooting JPEG, you can always dial in the +1/3 EV manually.

The C Fn. on the 1Ds 2 for Focusing Screen is 00. Setting 0 is for Ec-N and -R, 1 (standard) is for Ec-A, B, C, C II, C III, D, H, I, and L.

There is no setting for either the Ec-S or the Ec-C IV on the 1Ds 2. Here is a review of the Ec-S where it is compared to the Ec-C IV: http://www.pointsinfocus.com …ons-ec-s-focusing-screen/ (external link)

This is what Canon said about the new Ec-C IV screen in the 1D3 White Paper:

The Ec-C IV focusing screen is a Laser Matte unit whose molding method has been improved over the previous Ec-C III focusing screen's. It makes it easier to focus and provides natural-looking background blur (bokeh). It is also brighter and less grainy, making it a very well-balanced focusing screen. With the improved molding method, image transfer is better. The dispersion characteristic is improved, and the screen is brighter with minimal flare. The fresnel lens area is especially improved for image transfer, increasing the peripheral brightness and making the screen look clearer overall.

Compared to the EOS-1D Mark II N's Ec-C III standard focusing screen, the Ec-C IV is brighter, less grainy, and better balanced. The EOS-1D Mark III is compatible with all Ec focusing screens used by EOS-1 series cameras.

The White Paper also shows some close-up photos of the screen. Read it here:

The one I have in my camera is the Ec-D. I think that's the one with the grid.

I use that one too! Great for landscape shooting when there's no tripod or bubble level to make use of.

One thing I also added to aid in manually focusing is the angle finder C which offers a 1.25 magnification of the entire viewfinder and is indispensable when shooting with my TS lens which doesn't have AF.

Here's tonight's evening sky with the TS-E17 and angle finder C in use.

Nice shot, Jeff. ;)

fiebru, not sure...depends. 1D3 is to 5D owners a good compliment to FF. So, might/might not suit your needs to go FF, but, if it's one or the other, I would be hard pressed...even though I've never used a 1D3. ;)

You might only regret it if you got addicted to live view shooting. Otherwise, the full frame and extra 6.6 MP will be indispensable tools for shooting portraits and weddings! ;)

Cheers!

I like the concept of this shot but am having trouble, thinking that perhaps a tighter shot of the bail might have been more impactful so long as the space behind it was shown for context. Perhaps a shot from about 40 feet closer and slightly to the right of the camera's position in the above shot and shot down low, very close to the ground to make the bail more prominent in the image.

But besides all of that, I'm glad to see you actually using your 1Ds MkII and am looking forward to seeing more from you with this body. ;)

Cheers!
