24L TS-E landscape with 3-stop ND, and 3-stop hard GND. Straight out of camera except for WB adjustment and slight boost in saturation.

Chena River at Sunset.

Shared the view with a family of beavers, and a moose. Life is good.

Beautiful shot above!

If CF-4 is set to 0 then pressing the shutter button halfway should lock both focus and exposure in ONE SHOT mode. You say that doesn't work, no AE lock unless you press *? If you post a picture will complete, full Exif we can check your custom functions.

Yes, CF-4 is set to 0.
Sample. ON "red" press shutter halfway recompose on "green" and take a picture (this was made in spot mettering mode)
First without AE lock (*) pressed, second with AE lock (*) pressed.

I can't read the Exif data to check your other settings. Are you using center spot or AF point linked spot metering? I'm not sure that it matters but I thought I'd ask. ONE SHOT AF I assume?

The exif data indicates you're still shooting in the aperture priority mode.

If you shoot in Manual mode (M), you'll be more easily able to meter for the highlights by pointing your camera at the brightest areas of the scene and adjusting your exposure to see a 0 level on the camera's light meter which runs down the right side of your viewfinder. If you then have a flash attached, and set to the TTL mode, (auto), it will fill in the shadows and you'll end up with a decently exposed and lit shot.

Cheers!

I am driving down the coast to San Fran and hope to get some decent coast shots. One simple question. I'm used to being able to use AEB on my 5D where you set it and it shoots -3, 0 and +3. For whatever reason its more complex on the 1Ds2. I toggle for AEB, move the wheel to spread the exposures but when it fires it misses one. Is this the CnF setting I've borked?

You can set the 1D for 2, 3, 5 or 7 shot AEB. It is in the personal functions, #8 I believe. If you don't have access to a computer you can at least disable the setting of that personal setting in the menu (last one on the right) which will return you to the normal 3 shot operation.

This will likely be the last "balcony vista" shot from me for the next several months as they're doing work on my building's balconies starting on Monday, replacing the railings and resurfacing the concrete and in order to do the work, they have to block access to all the occupants for safety reasons so no fall sunsets from me. :o

Butch,

Awesome! What is the surface you set this on? Glass on leather?
