Nice shooting, Gene! ;)

I like the HDR look on those! And glad to read that you got your camera back in full working condition.

Cheers!

I took these photos today at the Orange Empire railroad museum in Perris, Ca. I used the 24-105L lens for these images.

For sure those are really nice Gene. The HDR gives them a really high end 'watercolor look' to them. Those deserve to be printed large and framed.

Yes, normally I'm not a big fan of the HDR look, but it really works well for these railroad photos.

Guys help, guy wants $1,800 for a 1ds2 with 140k clicks no service done to the shutter, comes with 3 batteries. Fair deal or should I ask him to come down a bit on price? The shutter count worries me.

I'd ask him to come down. If this chart is accurate the 1Ds2 is rated for 200,000 actuations. Granted it could last a lot longer but there's no guarantee that it will. For $1800 you could get another 1Ds2 with less actuations. Or a cheaper camera brand new. http://www.the-digital-picture.com …igital-camera-review.aspx (external link)

Mike, I agree that you should ask him to lower the price. If you wind up having to send it to Canon for any issues, it will cost you above and beyond the buy price.

Thanks all for the comments regarding my train/streetcar photos. I'm looking forward to using this body a lot more now.

For my camera, is it a fair assumption that with a shutter count of 1092 as reported by Canon, that the original shutter has been replaced? Just curious but I'm glad to know I have a shutter that's almost brand new.

Thank you so much Arild. I so appreciate your help. I don't have access XP or Vista; my system is Windows 7 64-bit (I do have a netbook that is Windows 7 32-bit. Would that work?

I forgot to mention that I did not get the CD's with mine. In reading your references, I saw that one of the needed files is not downloadable. Do I need to purchase a cd from Canon?

Does your Netbook have a Firewire port? If not, does it have a PCMCIA slot or something that could be used to add a Firewire port? If not, it won't help. It is a Firewire port you need on a supported OS.

Do you have Canon CDs from another camera? If so you don't need the CDs but if not then it seems you may need at least one set as the installs you download are complete but they will only upgrade an existing install. Some web pages say you can fake it by adding trees and entries to the registry but I couldn't figure it out the one time I didn't have my CDs on me.

Even for XP or Vista 32 you'll need to download the WIA drivers.

Thank you for the reply. I think I have come up with a solution after much brainstorming. I remembered that I do have my install disks from my 7d. My netbook has an SD express card slot which I could get a firewire card for; however, did I understand them to say that it won't even work on the 32 bit version on Windows 7? If not, then I can't use my netbook. I remembered that I had given my grandson my old laptop and I called my daughter today to find out what operation system it had and it is indeed XP, yippee! And I am quite sure it has a firewire port. They live in Florida, but I just happen to be flying there Tuesday, so hopefully I can get this guy's name off all my pictures and get my info on them. lol Also, I would like to set up some personal custom settings. Wow, I'm glad I like this camera or it wouldn't be worth all this trouble. It was so easy on the 7d. Again, thanks for your help. This is a great thread.

Has anyone on here had any experience with the Canon Service Center in Irvine, CA? The place in Houston where I bought my 1ds MkII has a 30-day return policy and I am going to my mom's (about an hour from Irvine) and was wondering if I took it in, if they could check it while I wait to see if there are any major issues. Also, about how much they would charge me.

Think hard about the personal functions you want to set. You can turn them off/on in camera but the settings can only be changed via Firewire with EOS Utility.

Remember that technology moves quickly. At the time the 1DsII came out, USB 1.1 was terrible so it was only used for the Printer connection. Firewire was IT at the time and while it is still around and Firewire 800 is still faster than USB 2.0, as with many other times in history the best marketed technology usually wins rather than the technology which is actually the best.

It is unfortunate that Canon can't give us a firmware update to connect to EOS Utility through USB. USB 1.1 is too slow for file transfer but for changing the owner's name and personal functions it would be fine. Just not worth it for Canon, they'd rather that you buy a 1DsIII (or 1DsIV when it comes out of course).

Hi!

I'm sorry I haven't been on my pc this weekend.

I'm actually not sure whether Win7 32bit will work, as I have not tried that one. As I use Win 7 64bit, I had to install Vista 32bit in a dualboot solution.

And yes, there is one utlity on the CD that was bundled with the 1ds2 that I have not found an update for on any Canon site... The utility you need might be on the 7D cd's, but I am not sure. Since the utility is not updated I do not think Canon use it for their recent cameras.

I drive to the CPS location all the time for cleanings and gear check-ups... Camera sensor cleanings are about 1.5 hrs if you get there early enough @ $30 per item... With that being said, a thorough equipment check (i.e. 1Ds2 body) may take quite a bit more time... When I got my used 1Ds2, I drove down to CPS and had them do a complete check-up on the body... That included body history (if any), sensor cleanings, real actuation count, and to verify that everything is up-to-spec... They filled out a work order form and told me it would take 7 to 10 business days to do a complete inspection... The initial estimated cost for the service was ~$150 (if I remember correctly)... If there were problems they found, they would contact me to let me know the issue, the cost, and whether or not to give the "ok" to fix it... PM me if you want to hear about the results and the benefits of being a CPS member...

;)
