I was excited when I got the 35L, and used it on my daughter's birthday party. however, even at f2, pictures are too soft unless step down to f2.8 or smaller. that was really disappointing coz it would be no useful to get a 35L.
to eliminating effect of my shaky hands, I test shot outdoor daytime at f1.4 That is soft. I saw some images here with 35L wide open that were sharp. so maybe i just got a bad copy.

xubl,

Your lens may need servicing. I don't see any areas in focus on your sample. The depth of field is very shallow, but some of the grass should have been in focus.

While the 35L is not at sharp wide open as my 135L or even 85 1.8, it is more than sharp enough for regular photography. I am not going to use it at 1.4 to do macro work. Here are two examples with my 35L at 1.4 on a 1DsII, with 100% crops and no PP sharpening. And these are outdoors with no ND filter - just dropped to ISO 50.

Like Michael and JH mentioned, it looks like it'll need servicing from CPS... My used copy is extremely sharp wide open...

If I recall, I had a similar issue when I got my 85L... Tripod mounted, center focusing point, and wired shutter release cable didn't help with the first few captures of my 85L... So I had it serviced by CPS (Irvine, CA) and got it back a few days later... They mentioned that the focusing motor was malfunctioning and fixed it up-to-spec... They also cleaned it, too... I redid the same setup, after sending it in, and the results were like night-and-day... JUST PERFECT!!!

So my recommendation is to get it serviced... It's a beauty of a lens...

:)

Yep! On tripod with timer delay or remote triggering for any meaningful test.

Cheers!

^ Interesting find... But what kind of "aliens" are we talking about? The female transformer kind? The new Batterstar Galactica cylon kind? Illegal kind? Or the Predator "half human, half creature, long hair, ugly teeth, and 7 foot kind?

Come to think of it, we already have an "alien" as governor here in California... Unfortunately, he didn't make things too easy... Hhehehehehhee...

Here's a few from the other day with a client. These seem to have come out well. I'm finally in love with my 1Ds II. No difference in FF? I beg to differ, for the most part, these are SOOC.

Still learning how to meter with this thing. Having a bit of trouble with noise too, I'm coming from a 5Dc.

Lovely shot.

I find using 11 active AF points with spot-metering linked to each point is the best way to get consistent exposure. Evaluative is pretty darn good for times when you don't want to have to think much.

The only noise issue I have ever had with this camera is when pushing the shadows of high ISO shots. Otherwise everything up to ISO 1600 is perfectly usable, especially when exposed a bit to the right.

Thanks for the compliment. I've enjoyed your posts here too.

I can't seem to duplicate the trouble I had with the noisiness of first shots now that I've used the body for a while. I still have trouble with photomatix being noisy in some situations, but I am coming to feel that is mostly due to a fault in the program. At times it appeared to be the case with my 5Dc too, it's just a little more so now (maybe a lot), but I expect that's due to the increased pixel density of the 1DsII.

Another picture of my dog, this time on lens test duty for my new Sigma 50mm f1.4

I think this is going to be a fun lens.

John, I'm sure you're going to love it! I have the similar Canon 50mm f/1.4 an it's currently my favorite lens.
