Very nice shooting there, Hoff! ;)

I went out on my first real winter expedition with my 1DsMk II today as I really wanted to see how the camera performed under an extended exposure to sub zero temps and started off with one battery that I had been using on the same charge for close to a week and the second, fully refreshed and charged in my breast pocket of my coat...just in case! I was amazed to see that the first battery held out for the entire trek through the woods and only after an hour, did it start to fade, going to the low indicator mark on the gauge. Though now back at home, it seems to have revived itself!

Anyway, a couple of shots from my adventure!

I wondering if there's not some fluke or design bug somewhere in the battery circuit or something. I've noticed when I get a low battery indicator in the LCD, I can turn the camera off for a few seconds. When I turn it back on, it shows a full battery and it may take quite some time before it gos back to the low battery mark. This doesn't happen with a fully charged battery. I wonder if NIMH's have some sort of surging or fluctuating characteristics that possibly fools the camera's battery circuit?

I've had that happen with pretty much every camera I've owned, and even some cell phones. Not sure what it is, but probably just the device incorrectly reading the power level due to temperature.

I'm not sure?

I assume the camera's battery meter is based on fairly specific voltage readings and when the battery is idle for a time without a load on it, a chemical reaction is occurring that regenerates the cells to a small degree, enough to stay over the target voltage hump?

Cheers!

Battery voltage drops under load, and also as the temp drops because the chemical reaction that makes those volts slows down at lower temps. Reduce the load for a while & new reaction creates new power, but it will still drop under load and in a short while reflect what it was before reducing the load.

Hi all,
I've been slowly wading through the 20 odd pages of this thread now for the last week or so and have finally caught up.
A 1DsII sounds like the correct upgrade for me, possibly around March. And also some new lenses to go with it.
I've been itching to build on the 10d & 28-135 + 50/1.8 that I started out with a few years ago.

This is with the 85/1.8 at f/2 and an EF-12 extension tube as I was getting frustrated with the MFD

To everyone who has posted in the thread I thank-you.
There have been many inspiring photos shared for all our benefit! To the one you posted a bit earlier TheHoff, that's rather beautiful! I'm sure the parents of the child will treasure that for their lifetime.

Welcome aboard. Thanks for the good words, too, but that is my boy, Benji!

Yea right so you can hold me up at gunpoint and rob me? No way, Jose'.

My walks now are really un-scheduled as I just get out when I have an hour or two here and there (the baby, etc). Check the Vancouver Street thread though as Cosworth is organizing another meetup soon.

Thanks!

I was begining to think that my pictures were so horrible and that was why no one was commenting on them...being the flighty artist that I am! :D

Here's one more from the same walk about for your dining and dancing pleasure!

I suspect the columns are around 50 years old or less as they were probably part of an abandoned foot bridge that never got completed or a failed dam project that got scrapped mid-way through the job as the water only drops about a foot at that spot. Beavers, in the summer time do make use of it to build the occasional dam there though and its a good spot for finding ducks in the warmer weather. But who am I kidding? The park isn't all that great but its close to home and a mild diversion from life in a big concrete jungle. ;)

Cheers!

Drove downtown today to Vistek Camera to pick up a new focusing screen for my camera. I was looking in the owner's manual and saw that there was an Ec-D screen which has a basic grid pattern etched onto the screen which will assist me in taking straighter pictures and also because the old screen it came with had a couple of scratch marks on it that were totally annoying the hell out of me and wanted a clean view! The new screen is great! Very helpful for its intended purpose and now I don't need to add a straightening and cropping process to my post work so I'm very pleased with that investment!

I also picked up the Arctic Butterfly 724 wet/dry kit with a lighted 7X loupe and this too is a wonderful product that actually works like magic and will save me from future trips to Canon service for sensor cleanings and additional time in post, cloning out the dust spots!

Now I desperately wait for spring so I can more freely get out there and start burning out my shutter! :D

Cheers!

If I'm not mistaken...the factory focusing screen is utilized by the multiple focus points...thought I saw something like that in the manual. ???
