Hello,

If it is displaying error message like "do you want to format the card" then the data in the SD card will be inaccessible. In this situation you needs to format the card, and data will be lost. The lost data can be recovered using memory card recovery software (external link). Download Remo Recover (Windows) Media (external link) edition software so you can recover your deleted photos on the SD card.

Here's a little story and I might need some answers!!
I have already submitted a thread about the shutter failing in my 1DS MK2 this week in the main equipment section but you guys here are wise ones when it comes to the 1D's,s

Here goes -

Shooting a wedding last week my shutter went and I had black and white lines across the LCD to tell me that and a error 99 code.
Being a CPS gold member I sent the body off on Monday and was emailed a estimate for a new Shutter at a cost of £275.00 all in, I wasn't really happy as the body has just covered 26.000 actuations so I gave them a call and explained that Canons flagship model should not fail after just over 10% of the estimated use, after a lengthy chat I reasoned that what else could I get for my £275 as the body would be serviced and cleaned.
Today out of the blue I had another estimate emailed through from CPS £845.00!! WTF was my first thought, turns out the shutter snapped and marked the CMOS.
Called them again and at the end of the day CPS are just there to fix the equipment so I wasn't giving them grief.
I asked to take things higher and spoke to a few people, and all were nice and understanding but the overall answers were well its a technical piece of equipment and it can break anytime.
My gripe is how can a big company make statements about 200,000 actuations for their flagship model and not back it up, If all this had happened at 100,000 then I could swallow it a bit more but 26k...
One of the tech guys emailed me some pics at f8.0 at a plain sky and marked on the image where the mark was, it really is slight and faint, as I use the camera at nothing more than f4.0 but mostly below f2.8 then would it show up as dust spots don't at these apertures??
Its also the fact that it is not perfect if it has a defect but could I live with this.
I'm still in talks with Canon about what to do but at that cost do I right it off or get it repaired??
I must end on a positive note by saying that CPS UK are very helpful and understanding people and when something like this happens don't shoot the messenger.

Update coming Monday...

The camera is just a storage box, it's the gLass in front that makes the image...

murkeywaters,

First off, sorry to hear about your problems with the camera.

I have heard of other people in the States and Canada using a similar argument with Canon service and ended up getting the parts for free and just having to pay for the labour. That said, it doesn't automatically mean that Canon UK is obliged to be as equally generous as the economy seems to be getting worse and worse, I could understand why they might not be able to be as magnanimous as their other divisions and perhaps during better economic conditions.

One thing that does sound off about your situation is that I can't see how the sensor got damaged or scratched as there is a filter that sits between it and the inside of that chamber. So while that filter may have gotten scratched, it shouldn't add up anywhere close to the higher estimate that they sent you. So I would definitely mention that to them when you speak to them next and make it clear to them that replacing that filter as well couldn't possibly be even close to what they're telling you.

Beyond that, about it being worth it to fix it, I'd have to say yes, because you could not replace it for the cost of that repair...even at the higher estimate price.

Good luck!

Cheers!

Man that must suck!

I do remember some people posting about CPS covering the replacement shutter free when their camera had really low shutter counts, but it was mostly US side, if the CMOS also needs replacing thats more money and probably a bigger debate.

I think at 20k they should cover it including replacing the sensor, the equipment was never supposed to fail that early, if it did its QC on their end.

Hey Ghost of FM,

Believe it or not that is the filter being replaced at a cost of nearly £600.00, was told by the tech guy that the sensor would cost over £1000.00 just for the part, no labour!!

Its a real dilemma for me as its a hideous amount of money for something I think canon should be at least willing to admit is a manufacturing fault and subsidize the cost.

I know some on here don't go with the 200.000 actuation statement but I think for a class leading product it should be backed up by the manufacturer, especially for the working pros that have invested heavily in equipment.

I, too, am sorry to hear about your dilemma, murkeywaters... I hope everything works out for you and goes in your favor as it did in with my 'premature shutter failure' on both of my 1D-series bodies... I'll be praying for ya man!!!

:D

Thanks guys,

Anything less and I would see it as just a camera, but this is special, feels good in the hand, tank like build (apart from shutter), amazing focusing system and the images especially from primes are just pure and a different look and feel to my other bodies 5D1-2.
I miss it already and just need to decide if I can live with a marked sensor??
