hey airbutchie,

You say you have had a couple of premature failures (shutters) what did yours give up on and how far out of warrantee were they if you don't mind me asking, I take it your sensors were ok?

The camera is just a storage box, it's the gLass in front that makes the image...

Hey Ghost of FM,

Believe it or not that is the filter being replaced at a cost of nearly £600.00, was told by the tech guy that the sensor would cost over £1000.00 just for the part, no labour!!

£600.00 for the filter is outrageous. The best ND lens filters from B+W are way less then half that at full retail.

If it were me, I'd bark up the chain of command there at Canon and keep barking until you find someone there with a heart and the power to do something for you other then offer apologies and excuses..

Cheers!

Hi guys! new 1Ds II owner here :)
just a question... in order to change personal setting, I need to use firewire
w/ canon utility right? however, my 4pin firewire connection on xp 32bit laptop
can't seems to communicate w/ camera... it won't recognize on 4pin to 4pin firewire cable...

so I was wondering if I could just get USB to 4pin firewire cable or have to get
firewire pci card and use 6pin to 4pin cable on desktop? currently have win7 64bit but willing to
install xp for just this purpose

I haven't heard of anyone using a usb to fire wire emulator cable to successfully run the Canon utility program so I can't say if that would work or not. You might have better luck with a PCMCIA fire-wire card if your laptop has such an expander port on it. If yours does, I'd go that route.

Cheers!

hey airbutchie,
You say you have had a couple of premature failures (shutters) what did yours give up on and how far out of warrantee were they if you don't mind me asking, I take it your sensors were ok?

Let's see... I had two 1D-series bodies; 1D2 and 1Ds2... Both were out of warranty... Any fixes would be done out-of-pocket with my CPS discount... The 1D2 had its failure at 49k actuations... The 1Ds2 was in the 65k, if I recall... Now here's the part you're going to hate me on... Both were shutter assembly's were fixed free of charge because of "early shutter failure assembly"...

Now I've been a CPS member for quite some time and they know my face there since I usually drive down to their location and get my gear cleaned and/or fixed... So I don't know if that had anything to do with it... In any event, that's what happened to me...

I sincerely hope you get something similar to my experience... Let us know what transpires this coming week with your 1Ds2 body...

:D

Hey airbutchie,

Thank you for your response, I'm gathering CPS in the states is a whole different ball game to the UK version probably because you pay a yearly fee- correct me if I'm wrong, and ours is free but no free servicing or cleaning.

Just come back from a wedding and I did miss the 1DS2 today so really looking forward to getting it back, just mulling over whether to have the sensor fixed or not, if I can work something out with Canon then I would be much happier having a perfect camera again.

What do you think of these pic's the tech guy took on f8.0 with the scratch circled? I shoot 95% of images on the 1DS2 at f2.8 or lower...

That marks looks pretty manageable to clone out or fix with a healing brush in Photoshop. If they remain firm on the price to replace it, I'd probably forgo the repair and just live with it.

Cheers!

Those marks look pretty common, I used to have something similar but got them all out after a sensor clean.

Murkey, sorry about your problems. The marks don't look that bad to me. 3/4's of the time I end up fixing worse sensor dust marks. Not ideal perhaps, but not worth the money to fix. Personally, I'd keep insisting that they pay for it, but if that didn't work, I'd just live with it.

My shutter failed about a month or so after I got the camera, luckily I had an extended warranty through the store and it was replaced at no cost :)

Also, Occupy Toronto started today..

Seemed like a lot, reports are around 2-3000 I believe. Interesting event, very civil and orderly.
