A pistol grip for a monopod?

Hi all,

First, I'm honestly not sure if I'm asking the right question or using the right words to describe this, but I think I'm pretty close.

I have a Bogen insert number here monopod for my Mark II and 300 2.8. I love the monopod, but my greatest frustration is that when changing angles while shooting down in hockey, I have to adjust the whole stick.

What alleviates the problem. I've seen a pistol-like grip on many monopods, and photographers simply move the lens until its in the right spot.

Am I talking about the right thing, and which is good for a 300 2.8?

A pistol grip would certainly work, but it would not be my first choice. If you want to shoot in "portrait", then you either have to have the camera hanging off one side of the 'pod by the height of the pistol grip or invest in an "L" plate.

My own first choice would be a plain vanilla ballhead with a quick release clamp of some kind.

I'd prefer either an ordinary ball head (Manfrotto 486 or so) or a tilt head (Manfrotto 234 I think)

I'll second those suggestions. I use the Manfrotto tilt head and it works just fine for me.

Same here, I was just trying to figure out what the OP was referring to though...

I, too, highly recommend the Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head for monopod use. It offers a tremendous amount of angular versatility while it is simple to use.

I've used this head on that same monopod pictured above and find they work great. Very fast movement and ability to track the subject.

I've never used anything larger than a 70-200 f/2.8 so I cant comment on the weight of a 300 f/2.8 or a huge 400 f/2.8, but I know it works great for the smaller setup
