I know this is a Canon forum, as I am a Canon user.
My friend was given a Nikon kit as a gift, and I have been teaching him to shoot. He is really limited with the pair of lenses that he has. He would like an inexpensive large aperture solution.

My question is:

Does Nikon have a 'Nifty Fifty' equivelent? In other words, is there a VERY inexpensive large aperture lens for the brand?

regards,

-Todd-

Yes they do.

They have both a 50/18 and a 50/1.4.
Not sure if they have anything larger.

A coworker of mine bought a 18-55 VR Nikon lens for his D200 for around 100 bucks, not sure the quality of it though?

nikkor 50 1.8 AF-D

currently use it. same IQ as my old canon nifty 50. very usable wide open. sharp at f2.2. razor sharp at f2.8.

difference?? nikkor is WORLDS better at AF. it actually locks in low-light, and when it does, its accurate. metal mount as well. same AF noise, but less buzzy and more muffled, but you can definitely hear it. lens extends when you focus, but doesnt spin, so polarizer use is okay. distance meter, but not the fancy one, kinda like the tamron ones. hope this helps!

I have found that lens online, and have had him order it.

That probably came in the kit. The Nikon entry kits give you the 18-55 and something longer.

The Nikon 50 1.8 is the way to go. It's got much better build quality than the canon equivalent.

I've also got an older 50/1.8 AF (non-D) converted with an eBay mount.
MF on my body, but very nice focusing ring and very sharp from f/4 onwards.

I switched from Nikon Recently. I had it. I still have it actually; I liked it so much I kept it for my film bodies.

But to be fair, it is 40% more expensive and you can get the Canon 50 MK1 if you want a metal mount.

Funny someone mentioned how good it Auto focuses. Have they tried it on a D40 or D60? :)

I was thinking about the exact same things...metal mount version & on a different body.

Also, the Canon 50 focuses rather fast as well on a 1D serie body :)

I mostly meant that the Nikon primes don't AF on the D40(x) or D60 because they don't have an AF motor. So if the OPs buddy inherited a lower end Nikon, the Prime is going to be MF only.

There is the Sigma 18-50 2.8. The Nikon mount has HSM too. It's affordable, but not very inexpensive.

very good point. make sure the nikon kit is at least a D80 or higher. otherwise, there is NO cheap large aperture prime for them to get. sigma 30 may be the closest thing to fit the bill, and that aint cheap.

score 1 one for canon for not crippling their lower end bodies...

The NIkon 50/1.8 is much better than the Canon 50/1.8.
