Is there a way to mount a telescope focuser & eyepiece to the back of a Canon telephoto lens?

I could see my 100-400 becoming a very good short FL wide field refractor.

If there were such an adapter, would it be much different than just using your camera as an "eyepiece"?

I've seen an m42/Pentax Screwmount-to-eyepiece adapter on the Russian site Rugift.com - they sell new copies of old manual m42 lenses as well as a few heavy mirror lenses. I also recall seeing someone who built a homemade EOS-to-eyepiece adapter by taking a rear lens cap, drilling a hole through it and gluing on an old focuser. If you search a bit, his page might still be out there somewhere.

Anyways, from what I've heard, even the best camera lenses are nowhere near as good as a small APO scope. 'course for the cost of a lens cap, an ebay focuser and a tube of epoxy, it still might be worth a try. :)

Uh, " !!! AHEM !!! "

I built this, although I haven't pursued the inverted image issue

This works MUCH better than "looking through a camera eyepiece." Depending on eyepiece used you get more magnification than through the camera, and it's brighter and sharper. This is because, even with a "fine" ground focus screen, you do lose some sharpness and brightness, because in the camera that's what you are looking at.

Here's some of my other low budget hacks:
