If the transmitter is the Canon ST-E2 you do not need a separate receiver, it's in the 580EX II. This will also maintain ETTL capability but will be somewhat limited outdoors during daylight.

If you buy a radio transmitter you will need a receiver for the 580EX II. The flash will go to manual but will not be ETTL.

The Cactus V2 radio triggers from GadgetInfinity (http://****/cactusV2trigger (external link) - link an ebay listing) get pretty good reviews and are really cheap at just under $40 for both a trigger and one receiver. Free shipping too, woo.

Remember though, like it has been said, with radio triggers you have to set exposure manually but they are much more flexible than the canon IR trigger. Radio receivers don't need to be in the line of sight of the trigger to fire and work fine during the day outdoors.

Unfortunately none of those will work, he has a Rebel XT which has no PC socket. He would need a hotshoe to PC adapter which I believe tend to be a bit more expensive.
