hmm... interesting. Just don't use any of the neat features of the camera and you can get proper images with no errors in them. I hope it gets resolved soon.

Well -- the good news is that it seems like a firmware issue. A lot better than a hardware or manufacturing problem.

cool. i have all of that stuff off usually. if canon doesn't fix this in a firmware upgrade they are asking for a bomb.

It looks like the at least one 1D2N also has similar problem. Not exactly the same but it's there. and the bad news is Canon could not fix the problem.

I certainly hope that's not the case with the 5D mkII. When it's all said and done, and Canon has the problem fixed, I am looking forward to upgrading from my MK I.

Yep. Did you hear about the new Mercedes? Works fine as long as you don't turn on the air conditioner, heater or radio. ;)

A gyro would add a few K to the cost of a camera, not to mention that a gyro system wouldn't work on a camera anyway -- well, you could make it work, but first it would take a couple minutes to complete gyrocompassing and then compute local level. A gyro is an inertial instrument so it must keep track of latitude so that it can constantly update local level as the earth rotates.

The camera uses something that is very effective and cheap to handle orientation -- a simple switch operated by a pendulous weight. That is why the camera gets confused and doesn't know if it is in portrait or landscape mode when pointed towards the zenith or when pointed nearly straight down.

I want to hang out with this guy? I'd be able to design a space ship in like two weeks! :)

Got a question to those wood be buyers out there, dispite the "unofficial fix" of turning off highlight tone priority, lighting optimizer and noise reduction...

Has this caused you to change your mind about the 5DmkII? Are you going to wait to get one to see if canon makes the black-spots official and releases a fix, or not just going to get the camera? Or just waiting to be in the right spot at the right time to snatch one up ASAP?

Me? Im going to wait, because I don't have the funds for a 5DmkII anyway right now

No offense, but hasn't this thread already been filled with people answering that question?

That isn't really a "choice" then, is it? :D

I got the call that my 5D2 had come in not long after this issue surfaced last week. I figured if nobody had a fix (or at least a good idea of what is going on) by the time it arrives on Tuesday (the 9th) I would unload it on eBay, seeing as they are going for $3000+. I currently have those 3 features turned off on my 50D and was planning on doing same with the 5D2. Looks like I will be keeping it.

I don't have it because I wanted it.... I have a loooong story about prior QC problems on 2 different 5d bodies.... . blah blah blah....

With this new information combined with my prior experiences with Canon product... I have to say I have little faith in their quality control. Something is off in their production facility.. and I was thinking that with this body they could not afford to have any further problems... looks like I was incorrect in my thinking..

NIkon d700 would look pretty good to me if I was having problems with mine...

I thought that was people answering about an OFFICIAL fix from canon, not a fix that some one using a camera came up with, I.E., the unofficial one.Hope this makes since, im getting a bit tired

In lieu of these revelations about turning off things, I have reinstated my order. It sounds like I wouldn't use the settings that seem to cause the problem or at least I hope so!
