........

They [Canon] are much too much like Microsoft, release the product and resolve the problems later.

I think you may be right.

It is unfortunate.

Well, the good news is there's absolutely no use getting excited about announcements at trade shows, then.

First, it takes 3-6 months to make the product available, about 6 more months to fix it, so figure +1 year from release to get something new. :(

I shot at Church all weekend and with their Xmas trees up and lights everywhere, I figured it would be a good time to check out the black dot thingamabob. Here is a pic of a christmas tree. You can go to the right side of the screen and a pop up will allow you to view the pic at 100% and see the EXIF data. I didn't see any black dots at all, and I blew it up to 300 % also.

unfortunately they're there -- very little though. This is a crop at 100% -- not magnified.

It clearly effects all cameras, just the conditions needed are rather remote.
Has to be blown smaller lights with the right amount of darkness between.

Best way to see it is to use a tripod and shoot some distance city lights with blackness between them.
Try a few exposure settings at ISO400, look at 200% zoom, they will show.

Blow it up to 400% and you'll get that sinking feeling inside, that it seems so many owners want to have :)

Good news is 99.99% of the times most of us don't shoot city skylines at night and the camera is very impressive with its features and details.
But if you do shoot skylines, I'd wait until a fix is in.

That's a joke right? People are not buying a DSLR for this? I can't believe this thread is 30 some pages of ranting for this.

I'll wait with eager anticipation for Canon's new firmware to fix this. In the meantime I'll shoot with the only FF Canon that I know of that can do ISO6400 cleanly all day and night (lights or not).

Unless you own a 1Ds3 this is about as clean and crisp a camera for image quality I have ever used. Is there actually someone not able to make a living because of the IQ of this camera? Did a mid-December wedding gig go up in flames because the bride and groom had Christmas trees at the church and the photos are online at 400% right now?

I see a few too. In this image most highlights are not blown or not very much. I think we've beat this dead horse before - there are NO lucky ones until Canon fixes the problem and starts producing 5D IIs with the fix onboard.
edit: you don't need to shoot night shots. Shoot indoors with fluorescent light or other bright light fixtures etc... You'll get em!
And these garbage dots can be seen in some shots at 50%, 66%, 100%, even at low ISO. I don't consider that "clean".

What's a joke? Someone posted an image and did not see the defect and invited others to take a look. I looked. I saw. I pointed it out. It's not magnified at 400% -- it's at 100% and it's not a rant. However, your post reads much like a rant.

This thread is not about whether or not one can make a living using this camera. It's about the camera's defect. Doubtless one can make a living using this camera -- but that point is irrelevant to the subject matter of this thread. You can shoot all day and night at ISO 6400? Terrific!!! -- but again irrelevant.

I don't believe anyone is denying the excellent performance of this camera under most other conditions. However, this camera has a defect. It does not function according to it's design and specs. By definition it is defective. To what degree the defect plays in the analysis and decision to buy is up to each individual.

It's funny to me that the ability to earn money is often held as the highest measure of a camera's quality. Funny because I've found customers are typically really not that demanding of the type of image quality issues we discuss here, and as such the willingness of clients to buy your prints isn't a very high standard for the quality of a camera. At the sizes that I usually print for my clients I doubt they'd be able (or care) to tell the difference between an 8MP 1DII shot and a 21MP 5DII shot. With all due respect to the 1DII, which is still an awesome sports camera, the 5DII (black dots and sRaw1 banding notwithstanding) produces better image quality, but if you used clients as the measuring stick you wouldn't know.

initially when i saw this issue i was dropping my jaw thinking "they messed up again"..and i followed the web-hype. sigh

but the more i see "samples" of the black dot phenomenon, the more i think this is just a pixel-peepers whine fest and it is becoming ridiculous. i dont deny that there is an issue here but it is SO dang minor imo (well perhaps not for the astronomy shooter, which i''d guess most of you guys here are not). welp, to each his own.

Go out and shoot something already!

i guess i'll unsubscribe to this thread now and patiently wait for mine. ~ ta ta

I just keep thinking about my 1D3, purchased before Canon owned up, that they did screw it up. I see blue, yellow and white dots coming along with the black ones that people REALLY are seeing.

Then why would anyone b**** this much about an issue that really only effects those shooting Christmas lights?

You'd think this was an issue so big the camera is unable to shoot a single photo. And most I recon don't even own a 5D mk2, so we have a lot of people with a lot of free time on a subject to which is irrelevant to them one would think.

I'll assume the weather has a role to play in this, and we have a lot of folks with indoor free time.

Anyone not buying a 5D2, that planned too, because of this - excellent; someone else next on a pre-order list can now have theirs sooner.
