I'm curious as to how people sort the many versions of the same image that may be created.

At a minimum, I know I have the original (crw) which I convert to tif to use in Photoshop. From PS I create the Gallery photo and the thumbnail. That's crw, tif and 2 jpegs.

I may also have different versions manipulated using ZoomBrowser's color, brightness, contrast adjustments or photos that were cropped or enhanced in Photoshop. I could end up with 6+ files of the same photo.

Do you store them in different folders? How would you archive them to CD's?

Just trying to get some ideas before the load gets too large.

Thanks.

John NJ,

Here's what I generally do with my D30 images:

1) (CRW+THM)->(TIF16+JPG)
2) TIF16 -> PS5.5
-rotate and rough crop
-levels/curves
-color balance
-convert to 8-bit mode
-any special masking
-final crop
-fine color correction, final levels
-very light sharpening
-save as 8-bit PSD
This result is my 'base' image. When enough are accumulated (~60), time to archive.

Then, using Thumbs+
3) Batch convert to 3 sizes of JPG (800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200).
4) Make web page to display thumbnails for all

Then, burn all to CD in 5 folders as:
Z:IMG_123
----index.htm
----1_Source (digital 'negatives (CRW and THM))
----2_Base (starting point for JPGs or special fx versions)
----3_ Thumbs (from Thumbs+ web page maker)
----4_Finished
---------800x600 (for my kids)
---------1024x768 (for my wife and zing albums)
---------1600x1200 (for my monitor at work)
----5_Html (from Thumbs+)

Make 2 copies - keep one at home and one at work.
So far I've got about 600 'keeper' images since January archived on 10 CD-Rs as above.

Im doing the following

CRW with thumbnail
PSD directory with psd & all changes made in layers
jpeg directory with full scale jpg, 1024 x 768, 800x600, 640x480, and a 300 wide jpg.

All images are also in directories describing the content. When I get enough to fill a CD about 650 megs I catalog the entire thing in Imageaxs Pro place a copy of the catalog in the main directory and burn two CD's. Then I add this Cd's images to my main image database catalog.

One Cd goes to the safe deposit box and one stays at the home office

Im presently evaluating all the imaging catalogs out there and am going to migrate this week to the one chosen. I have to do this as I now have over 60,000 images and hundreds of CD's I need to be able to find it fast when I need it. Also my clients are moving to the same database I choose as soon as I make the decision. Its now between Cumulous from Canto and Portfolio from Extensis. Ay comments welcome on either of these programs.

Rick
