The 50D is of course more expensive than the 40D. The 50D is also much heavier in your hand than the xti you are used to.

If I remember correctly, the AF in both cameras are the same. Both are great cameras and the 40D is an excellent buy right now.

The conclusive answer to the debate. Every camera is good. From the powershot to the XT to the XTI onwards right up to the 1D mark III and around the corner to the ae-1.

All what you feel suits you, what fits in your hands and what you can afford

The XTi is a fine camera

I owned a 40D and now have the 50D...my perception is that the AF is faster on the 50D than was on my 40D when using my 70-200 f/2.8. Nothing scientific...just perception. I think you will be pleased with either if you choose to upgrade.

A good camera helps, but ultimately its the nut behind the wheel...

Sports pictures from a XTi, which seems to handle that task pretty well:

Most of those were from a 70-300mm IS lens. No focusing problems with lens or camera.

With the XTi, you may already have what you need for sports photography without buying new equipment. However, if you want faster focusing performance, start with the lens. With Canon's collection of recent DSLR's, lenses make more more difference in autofocus speed than bodies. The fastest focsuing lens for the money may be a Tamron 28-300mm superzoom, of all things.

I don't think you will get a big difference between the 40D and 50D for sports. The AF algorithm IIRC is different in the 50D and it may be a touch faster but I'd doubt it be very noticeable.

If it was me, I'd get a 40D and spend the savings on a grip or a flash, or a lens.
