Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #5 - "Surrealistic - Macro Photography as Art"

Welcome to Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #5 "Surrealistic - Macro Photography as Art"

For this challenge try to show your Macro photo that adds a layer of abstraction to your subject yet still retains the macro detail level or at least enough of it to show it is a macro shot.

Basically any sort of subject but with the twist of some sort of artistic abstraction or style. Might be a fun way to try some of the techniques used in other types of shooting within the framework of shooting at the macro level. Motion, contrast, colors, you name it all combined to form something to elicit sensation in us viewers.

surrealistic: having a strange dreamlike atmosphere or quality like that of a surrealist painting

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/surrealistic (external link)

Everyone can try and create some visceral sensations by moving macro to a more interpretive form vs. explicit boundaries. Sort of a way to combine all possible techniques, or even something you have never tried, to create the a macro shot.

So make those bugs, leaves, flowers, drain pipes or whatever do something. As always, it's important the shot retains enough structure that we can tell it's a macro shot. A bit of Google-ing will give you some inspirations maybe?

Just thought this would be a theme we all could have a lot of fun with...so what the heck, come on and give it a try...even if, like me, you are brand new to macro, heck, I am actually brand new to photography really.

Wish you all good Luck and Enjoy!

I really want to thank everyone who posted a shot. I had fun watching the thread over the past week and really enjoyed the distraction. I know I did a lot more research on surrealism in photography and there is not a lot done on a macro level. This I think made the challenge results even more impressive. The shots are all so close in capturing the idea I had a very tough time deciding.

  • 3rd (Tie):
    • "Twins?" by Daniel2000 -- I kept being drawn back to this shot. I get visions of mirror worlds and other strange thoughts from this shot.
    • "The End of the Rainbow" by John_B -- The aliens are landing or just being born...I don't know for sure, all I can see is that they are here!! It also looks like a virus preparing to invade a cell. Very, very nice take on the theme, but, ummm, what the heck is it? ;)

  • 2nd: "Unfurling" by Flo -- it looks like that thing is going to just jump out of the screen and slam me in the face...I REALLY like this shot it is a nice interpretation of the theme.

  • 1st: "Flowing Tears" by genodm -- I just love this one...reminds me of something out of the movie Brazil. A lot of imagination went into your shot. I cannot wait to know how this shot was created.

This makes Geno the first multi-challenge winner in this series. So now you get to pick the next theme. And email John_B with any questions...at least I guess he is "the man"...I for one cannot wait to read what you come up with to get even, er, challenge us with! :p

Wow, thanks guys (I think :) ) Great challenge, Robert! You definately had me thinking of what to do.

As for my shot it's actually pretty simple. I took the eye photo at the opthamologist's office and combined it with a photo of my kitchen tap. Hardest part was getting the fancy dripless faucet to dribble slowly.

New challenge will be up shortly.
