The boxes aren't generic. The styrofoam is custom molded for each lens.

doest really need the styrofoam. only the box with the "Canon 14 F2.8 L II" is fine!
or "Canon 35 F1.4 L"

If you really hope to convince anyone you're selling the lens with original box, it better have the foam packing, too. Look on eBay. Shouldn't cost you much more than $50-$60 for one.

he asked for a "genetic" box, not a "generic" box.

Your best avenue is the lens rental places. One of them posted a while back that they were selling all of their boxes.

If the prices on Ebay are as Jon state (and I have no reason to doubt he's right), you should think twice about spending that kind of money on a box. Often times you will see lenses, etc. for sale that state no box, and I personally don't recall the prices being $50 or $60 lower as a result.

This whole box thing is overrated, IMO. Not to mention the fact that the serial number on the lens will not match the serial number on the box (so a buyer would know that something's up, unless you disclose that info prior to the sale). Having a box available for lens resale will not increase the sale price of the lens by a substantial amount (L lenses are generally overpriced on the used market already).

I can't tell if you bought your lenses new (and tossed out the boxes) or bought them used without the boxes. If its the latter, I'd venture to guess that you didn't get much of a discount either way.

What is a "genetic" box?

After reading this thread, I was thinking of squashing and tossing all the boxes I have for my Canon stuff to make some extra room on a shelf, and then I thought about the post above about sales of boxes on ebay.

Does anyone have any experience selling the boxes? I have boxes for my 20D, 16-35 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L, and 70-200 f/2.8L IS. Since I have never sold a camera or lens in 40 years, I have no need for the boxes. Trading them for $$$, on the other hand, seems better than tossing them.

Any potential buyers out there?

Its the boxes with the DNA strands on the front!

Seriously, there may be a market for boxes. I collect "antique" calculators from the 1970s and there is a big market just for boxes for these things. I myself have sold boxes for certain calculators for up to $40.
