I assume this is the right place to ask this question!

When someone has posted a picture, a subsequent posting on the thread might "looking at your exif data" or similar.

My question is how do you read the exif data on a picture posted on a thread of course assuming it's there!

There are several programs and plugins available. I like opanda

If you are using FireFox as your browser, click on Tools > Add Ons and search for Exif Viewer. Once you've added that, you can right click on an image and "View Image EXIF Data." Voila! If you aren't using FireFox as your browser, you should! ;)
