Bought a pair of Genesis 200 kit and would like to buy a cheap softbox from ebay. I don't want to deal with the expense of buying Elinchrom parts, I just need a cheap softbox to play around (I've been happy with my 2+ year old Octabox I bought from ebay).

My question is, most of the universal rings can fit up to 5.5" monolights.

Is that going to fit the Genesis 200?

From the searching I have done you (we, since I just got my Genesis 200 kit) this is the adapter that is needed.

I have the amvona 24x36 softbox and this is what I plan on trying with it. It is a nice softbox too.

If I am wrong then someone will come along shortly and correct me so stay tuned.

I believe you will need that adapter + an Elinchrom-compatible speed ring for you to be able to use a softbox.

A universal ring will let you use virtually any softbox. Just not sure if the 5.5" max will fit the Genesis. This is the one I'm talking about:

That universal ring is designed to be clamped over the small strobe like this one.

Hey Lotto,

Does that speedring only work with a certain type or brand of softbox? I am new to the studio lights myself, and I am starting to look at softboxes. Just not sure how the whole speed ring system should be purchased.

Thanks!

Sean, each brand of strobe has specific speedring designed for their mount. Few brand share the same mount.

There are third party manuafactures that make speedrings for different strobe mounts.

Most of the after market softboxes can fit any brand of strobe if you have the right speedring, but a few strobe manufactures make special softbox for their own mount only.

So we can 1)buy the speedring and softbox from same strobe company. Or 2) buy the strobe only, get the third party speeding that fit that strobe, and pick and choose the softbox from any company, like Chinera, Photoflex, or eBay.

I'd love to get the Elinchrom ring kit set + softbox but I'd like to spend 1/3 to 1/4 the amount to do that.

Anyhow, I took out my old monolight from my octobox with universal speed ring and measured the diameter. It is indeed 5.5".

So I pulled out my Genesis 200 and tried it inside my Octobox and fits perfectly.

I will be checking out ebay for a 24"x36" or 36"x36" softbox with universal ring.

those SP speedrings are NEVER in stock from BHphoto. i got one a few months back to make my amvona octabox work with my genesis 200s, and need one more. i placed my order 2 weeks ago and still haven't received my SP ring yet (no fault of BH's).

if they're in stock, buy 2! i wish i did.

Hi 545iBMW,

Can you share which softbox you end up getting and how much? Pic and feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.
