I doubt many have ever seen a boat motor like the one on this boat. It is a 35 horsepower Vanguard air-cooled lawnmower engine that drives a 2 blade prop via a belt and gears. It is manufactured by a company called Mud Buddy and on the right boat/motor setup can go close to 30 mph in 6 inches of water. If the mud is the consistency of pancake batter you can actually stop, start and run with no surface water. The boat and motor belong to a friend of mine.

Here is a closer look at the motor. Sorry for the quality, but I had to do a pretty close crop.

Theyve been out for years and are called go devils, I had one 20+ years ago before I quit hunting. They are an amazing motor.

The new motors that came out 5 or 6 years ago have been named short tails and are much faster than the old ones. The surface-piercing prop used on these motors is a third of the way out of the water when running on plane. The companies who make them are Pro Drive, Gator-Tail, Mud Buddy, Go-Devil, Beaver-Tail and Scavenger. The ones you are talking about they call longtails now. They've been used in Asia for a long time.

The one in the photos is a Mud Buddy HyperDrive. And, yes, they are a VERY cool motor.

Thanks everyone. Maybe one day I'll get one. It sure makes getting back into shallow places a lot easier.

Those are super popular here for extreme flats fishing. I call the "Loud SOBs". ;)

Pretty cool idea, but dang if they aren't loud.
