That is simply not true. The flash may give me an exposure of 1/4000th of the second and stop action, but I will also get the ambient at ISO 200 to 400 exposed for 1/250th sec at the apertures I want to use. That will give me plenty of ghosting (i.e. no stop action) in the gyms that I shoot in.

However, I am getting a 2nd flash and I will get them off camera and I will experiment with both direct and bounce.

40Dude,

Ths does not make sence for the ambient exposures. If your ambient is ISO 400 at 1/250 at the aperatures you want, why not set your ISO to 800 and get 1/500th of a SS at the aperatures you want. 1/500 is outstanding for an ISO of 800 in a gym. Somehow, I don't believe this is what you intended to say??

I suggest using HSS for what it's intended for -- outdoor, bright light with the need for wide apertures and fill flash. Not for trying to stop action. Let your flash do that, not your shutter speed.

Here are a couple shots I took at 1/250; ISO 200; f/2.8; with two off-camera direct flashes at 1/4 power.

Hey gatorboy, it seems like you're getting fairly well lit backgrounds in your shots. Is that b/g lighting from the flashes, or is it ambient?

I've been experimenting with using the same setup, but I haven't liked how dark my backgrounds are coming out. However, if I adjust my ss to add more fill in the b/g, I get ghosting.

Mostly from the flash. On the top image, I am sitting just below the flash, so that baby is lighting up all the way to the back wall. On the bottom image the flashes are lighting up the floor, but the lights you see are from the scoring tables.

Here's a shot from the floor looking up. You can see how dark the ceiling is, which is getting no light from the flashes.

To those who think HSS is great for freezing action, please take a look at this page:

I didn't see anybody around here who is using HSS for freezing action. That's what a 1/4000th second shutter speed is for or a short duration strobe.

There is no point in using HSS and 1/250th SS.

I can't use flash for ANY indoor sports. For football, I tried ss 1/250 with my 580EX and was unhappy with the amount of ghosting. I now use HSS 1/400, ISO 800 and the results are better. The MAJOR and possibly the only drawback is the recycle time is longer and eats up the batteries. I solved that problem with an external battery.
