About a year ago got my first L, 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM , wanted to get replacement for my good ol' 75-300. Didn't had to sell kidney but sacrifice couple of months of 'nights out'.

Yesterday got my second L, 85mm 1.2L II. Saved money for that about a year.

Started with a 450D in 2009. Added a few lenses.

Then went for a 5D2 in late 2010 which came with the 24-105L as a kit. Hardly used it so sold it for a 17-40L & also now added a 135L. My other lens is a 50/1.4

70-200 f4 non-IS. Bought it in a pinch for a wedding, then sold it quickly after for the 2.8 IS II version.

My first L was the 70-200mm f4 IS. I then 'upgraded' to the f2.8 II but never shot it lower than f4 for sharpness. I sold the f2.8 II and kept the f4.

I like gear and I have too much.

Were you not getting great results at f/2.8? Perhaps there was a problem with it. Mine is great and most others that have it would agree.

The 70-200 LII is the sharpest lens I have used. Sharper than a stellar copy of the 135L I just sold which I thought was a killer until I got the 70-200. I did a lot of side by side comparisons. Excuse me, I happened to be really bored one weekend...lol

I did once own the f4 IS which was also very sharp but I can't say it was better than the f2.8 II comparing the f4 at f4 to the f2.8 at f2.8

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Got the Rebel in 2004; got a bonus in 2006 and treated myself to the 17-40L and 70-200 f/4.0L Still have both, but should have sold the 70-200 after I bought the f4 IS version.

My first L was a 400 f5.6. Loved that lens for birds and other wildlife. Sold it when i got in to wedding and portrait work. I do miss it, but someday i will get a 300 2.8.
