70-200 f/4 non-IS.
Now looking at the 17-40, 24-105, 100-400 and 135... Damn you, addictingly awesome glass...

Looks lie a lot of people went with the 70-200 f4 non IS .
It is a great way in to L class lenses , well built , nice usable zoom range , great IQ , reasonably priced .

I think it might just have something to do with it being the cheapest... Consider it the 'gateway drug'!

Got the 100-400 in February and it has become my most used lens.

first L lens i bought was 24-70. but after 24-105 came out, i constantly took the 24-105 out unless i was shooting weddings indoor only. 24-105 is such a great all around and lightweight is a big plus especially on a bigger body with flash.

My first l was the 100-400. I bought it around 2002 for my EOS-3. I still use it and still love it. It have been with me to many places and has yielded me many great shots.
From 2003 to early this year I shot on crop bodies (10D, followed by 30D) and now stepped up to a 5D3, which rendered my EF-S's useless. Since then, I acquired 4 additional L's (16-35, 24-105, 70-200 2.8 IS II, 85) and don't think I will buy any non-Ls in the future.

Exactly what I wanted to say, it was my first L lens, and actually I would recommend it as a first L lens to anyone.

mine is 135L. i love it to death. Bokeh, sharpness and dead-on-focus is what this lens are for. Worth it.
