Was just shooting some drainpipe love tonight - lightbox, black velour, and 2 x 500w worklights.

Shot on 40D, 17-55IS - ISO200 1/40.

Slight PP.

Just wondering if these can be improved in anyway...

I miss mine, but it wasn't as immaculate as yours

I know the Magic Drainpipe is a lens, but that's all I know. Could someone elaborate? THX

The magic drainpipe (EF 80-200mm 2.8 L) was released in 1989 by Canon. It was replaced by the current 70-200mm 2.8 L in 1996. The differences between the two are that the Drainpipe has a (beautiful) black paintjob, lacks USM (AF is still punchy though) and does not work with Canon's Extenders.

The Drainpipe is reported to have warmer/slightly richer colors than the newer revision of the lens, but image quality is identical - that is to say - stellar.

Here's the sample shots thread.

Wow! It only had a seven year life! I'm surprised at that...

It did not have a seven year life... it had a seven year career during which it shined alone... the 80-200 is still alive and, in many cases, well... it is like a living legend and once in a while you'll hear of a new sighting

Nice images.

Its successor, the EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS USM is aptly referred to as "the Brick". If you own one then you do not need to ask how it got the nickname. :D

Daros: I forgot to add that those are some fantastic, dramatic photos! Almost looks like the obelisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It is as rugged as a brick, but maybe "cinder block" would be a better name because that is about how much it weighs. Using it is good way to work on your upper body muscle development. It is certainly heavier than a brick.

:D Thanks for the comments guys - I do love my drainpipe. Was originally saving up for 70-200 2.8 but found an amazing deal on this guy and couldn't resist :)

First off, beautiful photo's.

Critique :

1. I'd like to see a bit more shadow detail in the first image near the base of the lens. Not a whole lot, it's near perfect, just a little. One more thing and I think it could be a full page ad for Canon.

2. Backlighting, just a tad on all three photo's a strobe with a snoot or some kind of lighting with homemade snoot. A subtle defining line around the edge of the lens will make all the difference in the world as far as separating it from the background.

Aloha, iamKalaniPrince

BTW The 24-70L is the brick. I've never heard the 70-200 referred to by that term.
