What kind of bird is this?

I know the iamge is no good just wondering what kind of bird this was. I was on a hike this weekend and three of these guys came out of nowhere and started flying right above me and my dog. They were HUGE! Must've been about a five foot wingspan.

Turkey Vulture, ( or maybe black vulture. don't have a Cal guide on me)
Head is reddish so that would be turkey vulture.
The wingspan would be easily 5'-6'

It's a hard thing to get a decent exposure of such a black bird in flight like that. You would have needed about 2 stops of plus EC if shooting AE.
