40D ~ Err 99

While shooting at a gymnastics meet this weekend with my 9 month old 40D, I got the Err 99 message. Switched out the battery, shot a little more, then got the message again.

After I got home POTN was the first place I came. After endless searching and trying everything with the camera, my trusty 40D eventually got to the point that the Err 99 would come up after every picture attempt.

I sent it in to Canon Service this morning. Hopefully, I'll have it back for pictures Christmas morning (keeping fingers crossed).

Had the same thing happen 1 month ago to my 30D at a gymnastics meet! Maybe our cameras are rebelling against no-light-action shots in dusty cramped gyms? I can't imagine why!

Happened to my 6 month old 40D about a month ago. Sent it back to Canon. They had to replace the shutter assembly. They also calibrated it and updated the firmware. Works great now. The shutter assembly seems to be a problem with this camera. I hope they sorted it out. Glad I bought an extended warranty.

Don't forget to always wipe off the contacts on the lens and the lens mount on the camera body whenever that happens and before you send your gear in for a checkup. I have had that happen a few times and that was the issue each time (except for the issues I had with a brand new Tokina 12-24).

That has to be frustrating! Let us know how it goes when you get it back.

yeah got that with my 20D few weeks ago
sent it off and said it was to do with the circuit board
paid for it monday so should have it back before christmas hopefully

I got my 40D back today. Seems to be in good working order.

Replaced shutter ass'y, adjusted exposure (Yeah! It is MUCH better now. ), cleaned C-mos (whatever that is), and checked all factory specs. Update firmware.

The firmware update is the strange part. I had 1.0.8 (the latest available on the Canon support site). My 40D now has 1.1.1. Go figure.

I'm glad I got it back before X-mas!

C-mos is actually CMOS.
It's a short way of describing the image sensor.
So in summary, Canon replaced the shutter and cleaned your camera's sensor.

It makes sense they would have to clean the sensor. I assume that replacing the shutter assembly would create a bunch of dust. Since you mentioned it, I took my f22 shot of white paper. Not too bad I guess, only two dust bunnies left. Too bad it was spotless when it left here!

At least it works now. That is more than I could say before.

*crosses fingers i don't get the Err99 problem" i got the 3 year warrenty (on top of cannon warrenty) that should cover that problem if it ever arises correct?

Hmm...another photog posted the same about FW Version 1.1.1, but nowhere to be found on Canon's website.

I've just had this happen, on Xmas Day! 9 months old and Err99 on all shots, luckily I've brought my 350D with me.

I've not been convinced about mine for some time now. Exposure is definitely off more than it's right and I'm convinced it's back and/or front focussing. Hopefully a trip to Canon will sort it, otherwise I might have to trade it in for something else.
