Yep, I'm tall too. I tried a couple of more expensive monopods but they had me stooping over. On a whim, I ordered a 72" monopod from ebay and it's 10x better.

I know a lot of people are going to roll their eyes and give me grief and recommend a brand-name for 5x-10x the cost, but while you're saving up for one of those nicer monopods, search ebay for [72" monopod]... they go for ~$15 + $8s/h.

Nothing says you have to be standing to shoot with a monopod!!! :-)

I'm 6'3" and I was surprised to see the Bogen/Manfrotto 680B I was using is only listed at 60". I use it at full extension when I am standing with the 400 but it didn't seem like I was leaning over much. Considering the height of the monopod plus lens' tripod arm there is probably not much difference between that and eye height.

Much of the time I'm sitting or kneeling with it for sports.

I agree with Roy.

I think you don't need monopod to go all the way to your eye level. Look at any pro sports and you will notice that folks are kneeling on the ground when using monopod. As to why, to get those nice backgrounds. Kneeling and sometimes even sitting on your butt even when using monopod greatly improves the picture quality. You should be looking at the monopod which can go lowest when collapsed in case you need to shoot from lower angle. I have even used my ground pod with 500mm f4 IS to shoot soccer.

Regarding how much to sped, monopods are one place where spending money on CF doesn't make that much sense. Even cheap $50 can handle canon 1 series body and a super tele.

I'm 6', 2" and have been using the Manfrotto 679B 3-section monopod with 234 RC Swivel HD QR head very easily. Nice having it along in the field when I shoot.
