There's two grips for the 5D II?

What will the wireless one use for? Transferring files to your computer? Does the wireless one have an extra battery?

I had ordered one when I ordered the body but local shops don't know when they will arrive. I was wondering if anybody else had one yet (I got my body about a week after the first one was announced).

I never knew about the wireless one! Is there more information on it somewhere?

Thanks for your replies.

The wireless grip takes a LP-E6 battery (just one) like the 5D MKII, but the battery in the grip only supplies power to the grip, it does not supply power to the camera.

Here's more detailed info on the grip (Canon makes one for the 40D/50D as well, that is why you see it referenced in here):

Canon WFT-E4A Wireless File Transmitter for 5D Mark II Overview

The new WFT-E4A Wireless Transmitter allows you to connect to wireless and wired LANs, and supports FTP, PTP, and HTTP. Thanks to a connection wizard with broad compatibility, network access is sharply improved. The new WFT-E4A is a premier work tool with expanded capability to link up with external storage media and GPS devices and others.

Compatible cameras: WFT-E4/E4A: EOS 5D Mark II

Feature Highlights
  • Three communications protocols FTP/PTP/HTTP are supported.
  • Connection wizard for setting communications mode preferences, which may be done via camera nu. Wireless access point detection function provided.
  • IEEE802.11g and IEEE802.11b wireless LAN support, with top link speeds of 54Mbps and 11Mbps, respectively.
  • Image file transfer via Ethernet 100Base-TX wired network.
  • The built-in antenna is sealed against dust and water like the EOS DIGITAL SLRs.
  • USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port.
  • WPA-PSK authentication and TKIP encryption for secure data transfer.
  • WFT-E4/E4A and WFT-E3/E3A* support Wi-Fi Protected Setup™.
* Compatible with the EOS 50D only if the WFT-E3/E3A firmware is version 2.0.0 or higher.

Three communication protocols
Canon has raised wireless image file transmitters to a new height by carefully listening to input from professional photographers. The WFT-E4A pack into a compact body the advanced functions that enhance the production workflow in your photography business. It not only responds to various uses and networks but also offers smooth network configuration. It even comes with a USB host function for expanded connectivity.

Image file transfer to server: FTP mode

The WFT-E2/E2A/E3/E3A/E4/E4A makes workflow smooth and efficient by letting you transfer image files to a designated FTP server via wireless/wired LAN. Such capability allows other people to check, select and immediately use the photos you've just taken, regardless of shooting location. Higher transmission speeds mean the WFT-E2/E2A/E3/E3A/E4/E4A is ideal for a wide range of fields, from commercial and news photography to commemorative shooting.

FTP Mode Highlights
  • Easy network set-up through OS server.
  • Automatic transfer of photos the moment they're taken, including the specific image or images you choose.
  • Transfer of images viewed on screen with <SET> button.
  • Transfer with caption function allows registering up to 15 captions with a maximum of 31 characters to be created and attached to an image file.
  • Size and type of data, as well as recording media (CompactFlash, SD Memory card and external storage media) all may be individually selected for automatic transmission when camera is set for media-specific recording in RAW or JPEG, as well as in RAW+JPEG mode.
Remote control of camera: PTP mode

You remotely control your EOS DIGITAL camera via USB connection to a computer with the EOS Utility remote shooting function. The PTP mode of the WFT-E2 / E2A / E3 / E3A now enables remote camera control via wireless/wired LAN plus access to more power and options in studio sessions and fixed-camera shooting. In this mode, of course, all control functions of the EOS Utility, including the shutter, image transfer and folder monitoring, are remotely controlled.

PTP Mode Highlights
  • Easy PC connection with bundled WFT Pairing Software.
  • Focus, aperture and other camera functions can be set from PC while monitoring images on screen.
  • Remote Live View shooting, possible for manual focusing only, enables PC control of functions from zoom out to fine focus, as well as exposure and shutter.
Image browsing on the Web: HTTP mode

One of three data transfer modes, HTTP mode enables remote camera connection while allowing client users to browse and download image data stored on a camera's memory card via Web browser. This mode is compatible with any browser software or OS.

HTTP Mode Highlights
  • Users can check images and download desired image data after choosing one of the media available with the camera (CF/SD/other external media)
  • Access, via log-on names and passwords, can be done simultaneously by up to three users.

True, but for studio photographers it has to be a dream.

When you consider what it does, it really isn't. Now, if all you want is a portrait grip, yeah it is way more dinero than the standard battery grip, but then they are two totally different animals.

Besides, who got into photography to save money? LOL
