Hello Everyone. I'm new to digital photography. I have the following equipment.

Cannon EOS XTI
Cannon EF 14mm 1:2.8 11 L USM Ultrasonic lense
Cannon EFS 18-55mm lense
Cannon Zoom EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS lense
Cannon Speedlite 580EX 11 Flash
Velbon PH-460B tripod

My question is that i like to takes portraits and landscapes. Do I have the right equipment. I'm thinking of selling or trading the 14mm lense if it would be of no use to me. Any thoughts???? than you.

I would definetly sell the 14mm lens if you don't know why you need it. You could sure do alot with the ~$1500 (just a guess?) you'd net from that HIGHLY SPECIALIZED lens ;)

How did you even end up with the 14mm L ?

Then just stick with what you have while you learn all the ins and outs of photography. The 18-55 and 70-300 should be fine for someone starting out. Don't buy anything else until you can identify a specific limitation of your current equipment.

just regurgitating what i have read here before ...
1) 18-55IS is much better than the non-IS version.
2) Go practice with what you have - only you can tell where your current equipment falls short.
3) what is your budget?
4) What is your photography background (are you new to photography, or just new to digital)?

I think the practice part is the most important - hang around here too much & you will want to spend a lot of money.

1.6 crop & some lenses

The 14mm lens (external link) is an excellent landscape lens. The 70-300mm lens (external link) is an excellent portrait lens.

You already have excellent equipment to get good portraits and landscape images. Use it.

Thanks for your input. I have received the 14mm L as a gift. I have been taking family photos of my grandson for the past year. I was thinking about selling the lense and or trading it for a new 50D. I have only taken (1) one picture with this lense.

I also was looking for a good IS lense for taking just evary day normal shots of family and outdoor walks. Thank you for your help.

WOW, that's a nice ($1800!) gift! I usually get some cheese and crackers from Harry & David's

Yeah, if the giver of the gift doesn't mind, I'd sell it and look into the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS (or the f/4 IS and something like the 24-70L)

I'd keep the 14mm. It's a superb lens, and you'll be getting better landscape shots with XTi+14mmL versus 50D+18-55 non-IS. If you decide to go to an APS-C or FF sensor, the 14mm will get even better.

Sure, the 14L is superb, but there are other "holes" in his lineup that can easily be filled by that $1800. You could get a 50D and the 10-22mm and be in great shape for landscapes. I just think compared to his other equipment, having $1800 tied up in one prime lens is a bit of a waste.

If you're really into landscapes, that 14mm L is the best lens in your lineup, especially with the XTi. I'd be inclined to keep it.
