Worth Purchasing Sony PS 3 Product Coverage?

I went into a local Best Buy store today to purchase a Sony PS3 for my kids for Christmas present, and when I was checking out this sales guy told me that I'd be wise to purchase their comprehensive 2-year product coverage (for something like $59), because he sees some of them returning for repair/replacement. Now, as a person who's not into games and unfamiliar with these things, what's your take on this. Is the 2-year comprehensive coverage for the extra cost worth it?

I've NEVER in my life purchased an extended warranty from Futureshop/Best Buy...and I've NEVER needed it. If a product is defective, it's usually apparent fairly quick (plus most manufacturers provide at least one year).

In my experience with hard drives, they usually die within the first year anyway. And after a year, they're worth less than the coverage would have cost anyway. I would imagine that in the PS3s, the first thing to go would be the hard drive..and it's an easy fix if Sony won't do it.

Although, I'm surprised that it's "only" $59 at Best Buy.

So essentially I'm paying that amount for an additional year's coverage since the first year's covered by the manufacturer's warranty... I guess for the amount it's not too bad..

I bought my PS3 in November of 2007. It is the 80gb model. In may 2008 I had to send it to Sony for replacement of the blu-ray drive. Sony has a 1 year mfg warranty for the PS3 but they didn't ask for me verification. The Sony people just asked what date I purchased it when I called and said OK we will send you a box and fix it.

Thanks, that's good to know. I ended up buying the Best Buy 2-year coverage, because 1) it's pretty cheap and my mind's at peace (at least for two years!), and 2) the PS3 being game console + Blu-ray player, I figured things could easily go wrong...

I typically get the insurance for any large purchases. PS3 is considered a large purchase to me. Typically if something goes wrong with the PS3 then all you have to do is return it to best buy. Its either fixable or they give you a new PS3.

My sister's digital camera broke and when she called to get it fixed, they just sent her a gift card for the amount of the camera so she can buy a new one. She eventually got a new camera and bought the insurance again just in case. so she only came out of pocket for the insurance.

Like you said, to keep my mind at peace, I get the coverage on big purchases.

Don't get me wrong the added insurance is a great Idea. I bought two years of coverage from walmart that just adds on after the manufacturers warranty for a total of three years. I was just saying based on my recent experience that you could get by without it.

Yes, it is definitely worth it for both the 360 and the PS3. There are lot of moving parts and it is not unusual for the drives in both to have issues.

And i NEVER buy extended warrantees. On these two however I made exceptions and both paid off.

Yes, as a personal policy, I don't buy extended warranties, this being a rare exception. Another exception that I had made in the past was my treadmill. Its motor went dead ONE MONTH before the extended warranty's expiration!

I usually do not purchase the extended coverage unless the cost is pretty cheap or the item has known issues.
