Has anyone shot with this combination? How were the results? We're looking hard at getting the Wife the 50D soon, and need an additional fastish zoom to go with it. Ideally, we'd love the Canon 24-70L, but financially that's not in the cards. I've been seeing that the 50D's dense pixels expose lens flaws, but as the Tammy generally gets positive marks, I wanted to hear from someone with experience on this combo. Thanks!

My first thought is this: Why not get a lesser body (40D maybe) and put the difference toward a better lens? From your signature, you already have several lenses, so unless you two will be shooting simultaneously, can't you just share? If you get the additional lens, the 40D will be such a major step up that you probably won't know the difference between that and the 50D, especially if you never bought it! LOL

Good luck

Well, that's the thing--This is looking to be the main lens for the Wife even if we're shooting simultaneously. We would be sharing most lenses, yes, and the 28-135 would work for her except that it rarely comes off my XTi.

And yeah, the 40D was my initial thought, but she wants the ability to blow up enlargements the 50D would give with the higher MPs, and the better AF is also appealing (doubly so since I'd get to use it for sports on occasion). After having "discussions" with her regarding the need and price of additional components for MY camera, I'm not about to start playing the role of fiscal conservative with her desires. :)

you got a point there but i don't really think the 28-75 would help much if ur shooting sports it's slow and not long enough, so having a better camera instead of lens wouldn't help much either and i think the 40D does pretty well when blown up also 10mp is alot

don't get me wrong tho, i own a 28-75 and i really love it as much as my 17-55

I'm sorry, I've not been clear. The 28-75 wouldn't be for sports. The Wife would let me use the 50D for sports with the 75-300 we already have (at least until I point out that *she* got a new camera and lens, so it's *only fair* that I get the 70-200 2.8 IS). The Tammy would be her main walkaround lens. Also, the possibility of her being a second shooter at some upcoming weddings has been floated, and this looks to be a lens that isn't wholly inappropriate for that kind of shooting.

I'm using the Tammy with 50D. It performs better than it did on my 30D and after I calibrated the AF adjustment.... wow what a difference. For almost $400.00 I don't think you can go wrong with the lens. I use mine primarily for portrait work so I can't comment on using it for sports. I have had this lens since I first got my 20D over five years ago and it hasn't failed me yet. Just my $.02 and a sip of coffee. :D

Thanks Markhyo. That's what I'm looking for.

But seriously folks, I'd not use this one for sports! :)

I have the Tammy and 50D and the results are great! I highly recommend the lens. The AF hunts a bit in low light (common issue with this lens), but other then that its great, and can't go wrong for the price.

+1 It does hunt. I would not recommend it for shooting a wedding but it is a great all around lens.

People that own 40d on this forum are so negative towards the 50D, jb go with the 50D... it's a great camera.

I just upgraded to a 50D a couple of days ago, and I also own a Tamron 28-75. Look forward to trying them out this weekend. The Tammy was a knock-out lens with the 30D I had, and I don't expect anything less of it with the 50D. Got to change my signature now...I love doing that!

I've been using the Tammy for the past 4-5 years for weddings and I never had an problems with low light focusing. Infact it's my main lens that stays on my camera. I may have gotten a good copy in that respect. I had once considered replacing it with a Sigma 24-70 but why replace something that's not broken.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the 50D/Tammy combination and Tsmith8779 I guess I need to change my signature too.

Smart man.
But seriously, I am thinking of the same combo. So I will be reading the input here.

One thing I forgot to mention is that this lens became even better once dialed in the AF Microadjustment. :)

Thanks for the evaluations, folks. Looks like my initial take on the Tammy/50D combo was pretty accurate.

I'd love to see that AF microadjustment in action. I'm hearing good things about it.
