I have owned the Canon XSi since June and I just LOVE this camera. It does have a minor problem that I will send it back to Canon and have them look at it after the Holidays are over. The problem my camera has is that sometimes the battery connection is bad, but every time the problems are a bit different. This does not happen often, but one time is too many. To fix the problem all I have to do is take the battery out and immediately put it back in, and it works great again. The last time this happened I was taking pictures of the moon with the camera mounted to my tripod. All was working great, but all of a sudden the LCD screen went black, I could not focus, nothing. I turned the switch off, then back on but that did not help. I did that one more time but still no power. When I took the camera back inside and took the camera off of the mounting plate to take the battery out, then it started working fine.

Another time I was taking pictures, and all of a sudden the camera would focus, but it would not take a picture. This time the LCD screen was lit up, but when I pressed the shutter all the way down (after focusing) nothing happened. I could hear and see the focusing work. When I removed the battery and placed it back in, then it started working fine.

My question is this, has anyone else with an XSi (or any other camera) had similar problems?

Thank you

Charles

From what I've read removing the battery to 'reboot' the electronics is not exactly unheard of with any dSLR Charles, regardless of make. It does indicate that all is not well though and as you have already identified, the camera needs to go to Canon to be sorted.

Steve,

Thank you for your comments. I was not aware this is sometimes a problem with any and all cameras regardless of make.

I am reviving this thread with a couple more questions. I am going send the camera back to Canon either this week or next week thru the local camera store I purchased from. (In reality I really do not want to be without my camera!)

What is the average length of time it takes Canon to repair a camera with (what I would call) a simple problem like the battery connection being bad? I am thinking perhaps 3-4 weeks.

Also will the camera be reset to factory defaults? Will the shutter count (picture number count-I really do not know the name I am looking for) be reset to zero?

Will anything else be reset?

Thank you :)

It may not be a problem with the battery, all you're doing is forcing to reset the camera when you take the battery off. Did you try upgrading the camera firmware to the latest?

Not sure about the problem. Never had anything like this with my camera. But surely this is nothing that you can ignore. Something is definitely not right.

I think you might want to note down your custom settings like color..sharpness n blah blah. I hope it won't be reset. But Canon might reload the software. Better be safe, if you love your custom settings.

I agree something is not right. The problem is random. I never know when it will happen again. I feel I definitely need to send the camera back to Canon while the warranty is still in effect.

Does anyone know how long I may be without my camera???

I've had this happen to me twice where the screen would go black and not display anything until I remove and insert the battery back in. Also when I try to take a shot with it like this the camera would just hang and not do anything. I just recently purchased my camera from Costco and was wondering if I should just exchange it for a different one.

IF you can get Costco to exchange it, I would recommend you do that ASAP. I have had my camera long enough now I need to send it back to Canon. Perhaps sending it back to Canon will result in the camera coming back better than most production cameras. I have no idea.

Thanks. I just got the camera on Sat the 27th so I don't think it should be a problem exchanging it. I just hope I don't get another one like it. I'm curious on how many times it has happened to you?

I have had my camera since June. It does not have a problem every time, but it has happened more than I can count. I should have sent it back before now.
