Well, I have the L version for a couple of weeks now and I absolutely love it.
With 5.6 it's not fast - yet fast enough for some 200mpH stuff.
AF is slow but accurate, just late 80's early 90's technology.
Not truly a macro, but see for yourself. I will buy a 70-200 f/4L soon but I won't sell the 100-300 ever.

2 pictures at a time...sigh...and the size limit, oh well.
I will post a link to a gallery in the next couple of days.

Did you use extension tubes or crop for any of the bug shots?

No, that lens has a macro setting. No tubes.
Only Pic #2 from post #20 (BMW with flames) was cropped.

Try using a photo sharing site (flickr, photobucket, smugmug, etc.) and then importing the image. Just open the image on the site and copy and paste the code. Should look something like this.

*there is a] at the end as well, I just took it off so you could see the code without the image popping up.

Good idea!. This is what I did in the post above. However, the picture above is gone now. Either due to the fact that the picture at it's origin is gone or the POTN server maintains (clears) posts...

I am curious about this lens. It's autofocus is ancient, but I don't have much money and from the reviews that I've read the image quality is great. It seems to compare IQ wise to the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS. Sure, it's probably a lot worse overall, but if I can pick one up for real cheap....More pictures and thoughts on the lens please.

I have not really looked at pics from the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS yet. The advantage of that lens is the IS and USM. However, the Fred Miranda index is a mere 6.5...
Even though the older lenses are not listed there and this thread is about an L lens, the IQ is way better. Personally I would rate it with 8.5.

The only source I know of is at www.keh.com (external link).
They even have the almost identical 50-200 f/3.5-4.5 L and the 80-200 f/2.8 L in their inventory.

I am in the process of building galleries on pbase and will post the link here soon.

Please keep contributing. I no longer have this lens, but it is the only former lens that I still wish I had. I am subscribed and do look in and see what is added even if I don't say something every time.

Fantastic shot of the bear, btw.
