I'm not trying to be mean or rude here...these are just my honest opinions (as always) so please take them as such. If you're looking for hand-holding here or a hearty pat on the back, please ignore my post.
To be completely honest, to me the composition of all of these shots really leaves something to be desired. They look like vacation snapshots to me and not really worth "blowing up to poster size". They make for nice memories of the vacation...something to print as 4x6's and put in a scrap book, but to me these shots really don't constitute images worthy of framing that one would put on their wall. Aside from compositional issues, there are many amateur mistakes here...at least as you have them posted (none of which have anything to do with your "kit lens").
#1 is under exposed, the horizon is split right down the middle, the horizon it's tilted and there is a serious blue cast to the whole shot.
#2 looks either over-exposed or just over-processed...the clouds near the horizon at the left side of the image have virtually no detail at all. Again your horizon is too close to the middle and again it's tilted.
#3 is almost interesting...at least it's an interesting perspective, but I have to say that I really don't care for the black & white here. To me this shot looks like a photography student who was trying to do a perspective on "lines" but beyond that I don't think there's really that much to this shot.
#4...except for that big whatever it is in the lower center of the image, to me this just looks like an ordinary shot taken from a high rise of any city anywhere. Nothing to me really says "Paris" in this shot. Also again your horizon is tilted, there's a blue hue and to me the shot is overly contrasty as well.
That said, I would simply let your mother choose which shot she wants. Mothers are great in that respect as they're generally going to love anything you do. Let her pick out which shot she likes, blow it up and enjoy the memories of your vacation.
Again these are just my own opinions here...please take them for what they're worth.
Peace,
Jim
