I imagine the weight of the lens isn't enough to throw a good ballhead out of whack. The heavier lenses have mounts because the weight of the lens can drag even on a decent ballhead. Having the mount on the lens makes for a nice balance, and is even effective with 1D bodies.

I have a Smith Victor BH8 Metal Alloy Ball Head with 40 lb. Capacity and its overkill!

The Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM & the Canon 70-200mm f/4L EF USM weigh about the same. there is only a few once difference so I don't feel it's a problem mounting the body and not the lens.

17-40 weighs 17.5 oz
70-200 weighs 25.0 oz

Pump some light at it, and the pics should be aight. That lens is godly - too bad it's in't fast or I would have kept it in a heartbeat.
