The heavier lenses have mounts because the weight of the lens can drag even on a decent ballhead. Having the mount on the lens makes for a nice balance, and is even effective with 1D bodies. I have a Smith Victor BH8 Metal Alloy Ball Head with 40 lb. Capacity and its overkill!
