Now that would be cool. A 55-200 f/1.8L lens. Throw in IS and I'll take 2! ;)

Thanks, I love it as well. Wish I would have more chances to use it though :( I've thought of selling it for a 70-200 2.8 IS but know if once I get the 7D (soon hopefully) I will regret it lol

Looks like a D700

Indeed.

That lens is on my want-to-try list though ... in EF mount, obviously. :p

It is a sensational manual-focus optic.

Leaf shutters. Yes, please. (they allow flash sync to the max shutter speed)

They also generally have slow maximum shutter speeds, 1/500 is typical. I'd rather just use NDs with flashes than be limited to such slow speeds, in fact due to being so slow you'd need NDs fairly often anyway. Focal plane shutter sync speeds can also be made much higher, one of the older 1D's did something like 1/500 and had a max shutter speed of around 1/10000, with the tech available now that could easily be beaten. Also a lot of Nikon flashes and cameras have a high speed sync mode, and I think some Canon's have it too now.

The 1D Classic does 1/16000 and flash sync normally of 1/500 but can really sync at any speed but that's because it was CCD, not CMOS and CCD has some real advantages in this area. Less in others which is why it has mostly lost out to CMOS.

High speed sync is a different beast.

It is.

It is important to note though that the electronic focal-plane shutter of the 1D was a contributing factor in its success with wireless users.

The vertical shutter is what gave us higher sync speeds in the first place. Cloth horizontal shutters just couldn't move fast enough, too far to go, single piece to move. Modern vertical shutters from the 1V on are marvels, though they don't seem that way when they break.

Getting back to pictures, the body of a camera with a leaf shutter lens literally is little more than a light tight box. The lens does aperture, shutter speed and release, flash, self timer! The only thing the body does is hold, wind and rewind the film. Looking in the back you just see the back of the lens with the shutter:

I have always been a fan of the D70(s)'s pentaprism appearance.

Buying lenses is hardly a concern for those who are or have used separate systems in the same outfit. The larger concern is the differences in user-interface and different shooting methods one prefers for each.

Absolutely this.

If the differences are so great it's a non-issue, but for two cameras that are so similar it can get really confusing.
