Did the same thing, that kit zoom lens was a pain. I couldn't find a pancake lens locally so I returned it and went the nex5 route

The older FD mount lenses had the extra ring to tighten it to the body - breech-mount, I think it's called - (I think they're ugly as sin haha), while the newer ones were just straight snap on like an EF lens (bayonet mount, if I'm not mistaken).

Quite a bit of sand paper and plenty of spare time, some careful masking too xD. Just recently clear coated the front panel so it doesn't tarnish like the area around the shutter release.
