I simply can't believe it. I literally got the Mark III camera (Serial 570xxx) from Dell yesterday and today I went to my cousin's hockey game to try it out with my Canon 300mm 2.8 L....everything was going fine until picture #248. After that I got the dreaded Err99. Turned it off, heard the shutter click back into place, then turned it on. I was able to take another picture, then the subsequent one another Err99. Repeated these step 5-6 times and finally got fed up and stopped using the camera.

I went home and fully charged the battery, although it didn't need to be. I connect a 24-70 L lens to it, attempted to take a picture....Err99

WTF!

I've read tons of forums about Err99 and the Mark III. Basically I'm screwed and have to send it to Canon. I'm hoping I can just return it to Dell for a brand new one...I'll have to call and see.

The worst part about this is I'm leaving on vacation on Friday for 2 weeks. I WANTED TO BRING THE CAMERA!! *#&$#)(#*&#*

Just completely pissed and disappointed. Merry X-mas.

As with other canon cameras..this is starting to seem common place...

I don't own a mark III...would like to...but try updating the firmware to the newest available...the link is at the top of the forum..

It may help..

Good luck
Gary

Fortunatley the camera already came loaded with Firmware 1.2.3...and the serial number is high enough that it supposedly wasn't prone to problems of earlier manufacture dates. Unfortunatley the brand new camera still broke.

Well, that sucks -- I'd go for the Dell exchange. This is in no way "typical" of these cameras, and since you are using lenses that I presume you've been using with the 40D, Canon L lenses, I'd say your body has a problem, and with it being brand new take the exchange from the vendor.

The one thing that occasionally clears this type of problem up is removing both the main battery and the "system" battery (inside the battery compartment), remove the lens, let the camera set for awhile then put it all back together.

Other things to try: does the camera power up without a lens attached? Can you, for instance, do a sensor cleaning function? If it only Errs when a lens is attached that would at least be a clue.

Yeah..I've tried the camera without any lens and no luck. Tried all my lenses that have worked fine on my 40D...nothing. Tried with new memory card and without one completely...no luck.

I removed the main battery and will let it sit. Not sure about how to remove the "system" battery you refer....frustrating.

Could a faulty memory card cause this?

Perhaps dirt or foreign object on one of the contacts between the lens and body?

Good luck!

Cheers!

I had first and only error 99 when trying out my 85 earlier this fall. It was suggested that I format the card. Since doing so I've not had another error, but I haven't used the 85 since then either. Give a go at that, and I hope you get up and running by your vacation.

Same thing happened w/ my 40D. I had to send it in. Should have it back sometime next week. I would exchange it for a new one with dell.

I can only sympathize with your extreme X-disappointment. But, stuff happens. Ship that sucker back to Dell priority and demand a quick turn-around. Once you get a working version, you'll be thrilled silly as the MK3 is one killer camera.

Well, that sucks -- I'd go for the Dell exchange.

If you can just return this one and buy another one. I don't think you're going to get as fast as service as you need if you exchange it. I'd be wary taking a new camera on vacation as the only body to have. Great that it did it now and not when you're on vacation.

Another thought would be..if you live close enough to one of the service centers to take it there. I've read that people have dropped off one day and gotten it back the next. Though it depends on how bad this one is.

This is slightly (ok, definitely) unscrupulous, and I only bring it up since you're going on vacation... Just go to a store and buy a new one, keep that one, and return the err99 camera to the store. Voila.

Again, depends on the moral compass of those involved.

Switch bodies won't work because the serial #'s wouldn't match for the return.

Too bad. Just got a 1DmkIII for hockey and so far, so good.

Hope you get a working camera back soon.

Ken

So this morning I turned on the camera, attempted to take a picture, Err99. Repeated another couple times, same thing. So I decided to resort to a light tap...got nothing to lose. We're not talking about smacking it on a hard surface or requiring a hammer.

I took the camera and held it in my right hand...with my left hand palm I gave it a light whack on the camera's left side (where the AV connectors are)...turned on the camera...snapped a picture...then another...then another...finally said bonzi and enabled the hi-speed (10 fps) and held down the button. Worked. Held it down again for another couple seconds...worked.

I've been taking random test pictures all this morning and the POS is working!!!! I can't get an Err99 anymore. I mean really...c'mon....seriously?

I'm still sending it back as this never should have occured in the first place, but wow...are you kidding? A whack fixed it...at least for now.

I was thinking same thing, but not all retailers put the serial number on the receipt.

Hi, sorry to hear about the issue you're having, I had the same problem,,, here is the thread: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=583098

I tried everything, nothing worked until I took it with me to Jamesburg, NJ, as I was there for a few days only (I live in Europe) they placed the camera in a RED bag and it was done in TWO days... I got back Monday and it was done... They supposedly did not determine what was the cause of the problem except they did some cleaning and whatever... but after I got it the front desk person told me that they replaced some kind of a lens seal or something... Anyhow, they were nice an my camera is back like new (two months old and it was serviced already...)::::
